Bobcats punch ticket to fourth straight NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS --- The Lees-McRae College men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fourth straight year, announced NCAA officials Monday with the release of the 32-team field.

Lees-McRae (13-4-3), the reigning national runner-up, is the sixth seed in the Southeast Region and will face third-seeded and fourth-ranked Clayton State University (16-3), who are returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Bobcats carry a four-match unbeaten streak into the tournament after claiming both the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles.

The University of Montevallo (18-2-1) earned the top spot in the region and a first round bye after defeating second-seeded Flagler College (14-4-1) in Sunday’s Peach Belt Conference Championship. Both Montevallo and Flagler will receive a first round bye, with Flagler facing the winner of Lees-McRae and Clayton State in the second round.

Wingate University (15-3-0) is the fourth seed, and will take on new South Atlantic Conference foe and fifth-seeded Anderson University (14-5-1) in a first round matchup. Anderson made the tournament field after knocking off Wingate and Mars Hill en route to the SAC Tournament title on Sunday. The winner of Wingate and Anderson will then face Montevallo in the second round.

Lees-McRae will take the pitch against Clayton State on Wednesday in Morrow, Ga. in its quest to return to the national championship match for the second straight season. Match time is yet to be determined.
