WILSON, N.C.-The Barton College women’s
basketball team has been ranked 21st in the Women’s Division
II Bulletin Preseason Top-25 Poll released as part of the 2011-12
Preseason Fact Sheet on Friday.
The
Lady Bulldogs are only one of three teams from the Southeast Region
that are ranked in the WDIIB Preseason Top-25. Defending national
champions Clayton State University of the Peach Belt Conference are
the preseason favorites; Barton represents Conference Carolinas as
No. 21 and Wingate University of the South Atlantic Conference
(SAC) are No. 24.
After concluding a banner year last season that featured winning
the Conference Carolinas regular season title, the 2011 Conference
Carolinas Tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA
Division II National Tournament, the Barton College women’s
basketball team will be a target of excellence from all opposition
throughout the league, in the Southeast Region, and throughout DII
basketball.
The three-time reigning league regular season champions wrapped
up last season with a program-best 26-5 record after losing in the
second round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament to the
eventual national champions Clayton State University. BC
boasted an 18-2 record in league play.
The Lady Bulldogs are guided by 23nd year head coach Wendee
Saintsing, who is the two-time reigning Conference Carolinas Coach
of the Year. Saintsing returns a deep class of 12 letter winners
featuring Second Team All-Conference/Freshman of the Year/
Tournament MVP Nyeshea Willie (12.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.8 spg, 2.4 apg)
and Third Team All-Conference/Southeast Regional All-Tournament
Team award winner Jannetta Robinson (12.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3
apg, 1.9 spg). Janae Jackson (8.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) Jolanda Mitchell
(7.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) also started in majority of last year’s
games.
Coach Saintsing added five talented newcomers that all have a
chance to crack the lineup and will be looking for one Lady Bulldog
to step into the point guard position vacated by All-Region and
First Team All-Conference honoree Jamila Johnson, who led the
conference in assists and her team in scoring her senior
season.

Mount Olive's Derek Staton Earns Division II Bulletin Preseason
All-America Honorable Mention
October 18, 2011
Mount Olive College guard Derek Staton garnered his second
preseason All-America award, earning Honorable Mention on the
2011-12 Division II Bulletin Men’s Basketball Preseason
All-America Team. Staton and teammate Craig Hayes also earned
All-America Honorable Mention from The Sporting News in
September.
Staton, a 5-9 senior from Norfolk, Va., was named to the 2010-11
All-Conference Carolinas Second Team after averaging 19.6 points
and 3.9 assists per game. He scored a career-high 37 points against
Limestone in the first round of last year's conference tournament.
In his sophomore year, Staton ranked among the top 20 in the nation
with 5.6 assists per game. He set a school single-game record for
assists and still holds the Trojans' single-season assists
record.
Staton was pressed into service from day one in his freshman
year, getting the start at point guard in his first six collegiate
games due to a preseason injury to two-time All-Conference
Carolinas selection Justin Melton. Staton was the Trojans’
starting point guard in his sophomore year, then emerged as a
shooting guard last year. Staton averaged 30.3 points per contest
in his final four games of 2010-11.
Despite a rash of injuries, Mount Olive posted its ninth
consecutive winning season last year with a 14-13 record. Staton is
among the Trojans’ five returning starters. The Trojans saw
their first preseason action Monday in the annual MOC Green and
White Game.
Mount Olive tips off its 2011-12 regular season November 11-12
at the Tusculum College Tournament in Greeneville, Tenn. The
Trojans will face Tusculum and former Conference Carolinas member
Anderson, which reached the Elite Eight last year. Mount Olive
defeated Anderson 83-80 in the championship game of the 2010
Conference Carolinas Tournament in the last meeting between the two
teams.
Mount Olive plays host to the 46th Annual Pickle Classic Nov.
18-19 at Kornegay Arena. Joining the Trojans in this year's
tournament are Barton, Brevard and Virginia Union. Mount Olive
faces Brevard the first night and Virginia State the second
night.

Division II Bulletin tabs Limestone men's basketball as a
"Team to Watch"
GAFFNEY, S.C. – Following one of the most
impressive seasons in Limestone College men’s basketball NCAA
Division II history, the Saints have been named as a “Team to
Watch” by the Division II Bulletin, which is billed as
“The small college hoops experts since 1991”.
Last season, Limestone went 23-7 overall and 14-4 in Conference
Carolinas action and won 16 of their first 19 games. They earned
their first ever Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship with
a thrilling 68-59 victory over Coker in the championship game and
reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history.
As a result of that success, and the return of Sporting News &
DII Bulletin Preseason All-American Honorable Mention Jarrell
Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.), the Saints have been chosen as
a “Team to Watch” in the Division II Bulletin’s
2011-12 Division II Preseason Poll. Limestone is joined by fellow
Conference Carolinas member Queens University of Charlotte, which
is ranked No. 15 in the nation, and Southeast Region members
Georgia Southwestern (No. 18) and Anderson and USC Aiken, both of
which were listed as “Teams to Watch”.
Limestone kicks off the 2011-12 season with a home exhibition
against Athletes in Action on November 2 (7:30 p.m.) before
traveling to Charleston, S.C. for an exhibition against Division I
College of Charleston at the 5,100-seat TD Arena on November 5 at 6
p.m.
The Saints will begin the regular season at home when they host the
2011 Conference Carolinas/SAC Challenge from November 11-12 at the
Timken Center.
