Coker to Host NCAA Men's Soccer Regional; Lees-McRae also Punches Ticket to the Big Dance

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College has been selected as the top seed and host for this week's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Men's Soccer Tournament. One of just 32 teams selected nationwide, the Cobras will host the first and second round of the tournament with matches being played on Friday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 13.  

Coker, who is ranked No. 5 in the latest National Collegiate Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) national poll, will face the winner of the opening round match between the #4 seed Mars Hill College and the #5 seed the University of Montevallo on Friday at 7 p.m.

The other first round match will feature the #2 seed Flagler College against the winner of the #3 seed Anderson University versus the #6 seed Lees-McRae College on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

The winning teams from the first round will advance to play the second round game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. All first and second round games will be played at the Coker Soccer Field.

The regional winner advances to the quarterfinal round of the tournament to be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 at a to be determined site.

One of the toughest regions in the nation, the Southeast Regional features four teams ranked in Top 25: No. 5 Coker, No. 11 Anderson, No. 19 Flagler and No. 25 Mars Hill. 

This is Coker's first trip to the NCAA Tournament and their first time hosting an NCAA Regional in any sport. 

The Regular Season and Conference Carolinas Tournament Champions, the Cobras have only played one of the six teams in the regional during the regular season, Lees-McRae. Coker was 1-1 against Lees-McRae during the regular season, including a 1-0 win over the Bobcats on Sunday to capture the conference tournament championship.

Bobcats earn bid to NCAA Tournament, will face Anderson Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS --- The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team has been selected to participate in its fifth-straight NCAA Division II men's soccer championship, announced NCAA officials Monday evening.

Lees-McRae (14-5-1) advanced to the championship match of the Conference Carolinas Tournament this past weekend, dropping a narrow 1-0 decision to regular season and tournament champion Coker College (18-2). The Bobcats are the sixth seed in the Southeast Region, drawing an opening round matchup with Anderson University (17-3), who defeated LMC by a 4-0 score line earlier this season.

Coker is the top overall seed in the region tournament, earning a first round bye and a matchup with the winner of the opening tilt between fourth-seeded Mars Hill College (11-5-1) and fifth-seeded University of Montevallo (12-4-4). The winner of the Lees-McRae/Anderson matchup will take on second-seeded Flagler College (15-3-2) in the second round.

The Bobcats sport a balanced offense attack this season, led by sophomore James Galvani (High Wycombe, England), and freshmen James Smith (Eastbourne, England) and Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.). Galvani enters the tournament with a team-leading 10 goals and 24 points this season, while Smith and Alford have posted 16 and 14 tallies, respectively.

Lees-McRae will take on Anderson in its opening round match on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in Anderson, S.C. The Bobcats will look to avenge a 4-0 loss to the Trojans earlier this season.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee announced today the field of 32 teams for the 2011 Division II Men’s Soccer Championship.

Championship Information

Two to six teams were selected from each of the eight regions.  Teams from the same region will be paired for opening-, first- and second-round competition, which will be conducted November 9-13 on campus sites.  Quarterfinals will be held on campus sites and completed by November 20.  The semifinals and final will be played December 1 and 3 at Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Fla., hosted by the West Florida and the Pensacola Sports Association.  

In the 2010 championship, Northern Kentucky claimed the championship title with a 3-2 victory against Rollins.
