Former Mount Olive College Pitcher Carter Capps Named 2010-11 CCA Division II Southeast Region Male Scholar Athlete Of The Year

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Former Mount Olive College pitcher Carter Capps, a first team CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American, has been named the 2010-11 Division II Southeast Region Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association. Capps becomes the second Trojan student-athlete in the last four years to win the award.

Capps compiled a 3.46 cumulative grade point average majoring in environmental science during his six semesters at Mount Olive College. He became the fourth Trojan student-athlete in any sport to earn Academic All-America first team honors.

On the diamond, Capps set an NCAA Division II record with 24 consecutive wins. He tallied a career 24-1 record in his two seasons at Mount Olive, helping lead the Trojans to the 2011 NCAA II Southeast Regional championship and a third-place finish in the NCAA II National Finals. The Trojans won back-to-back Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles during Capps' two years.

Capps was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft and signed with the Mariners in early August. He was assigned Class A Clinton (Iowa) of the Midwest League.

Prior to joining Clinton, Capps pitched for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was selected to the league's All-Star Game. Capps pitched one hitless inning of relief with three strikeouts.

Capps joins current Trojan assistant baseball coach Jason Sherrer among winners of the CCA Division II Southeast Region Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Sherrer won the 2007-08 award, the year he was starting catcher for Mount Olive's national champion baseball team.

Along with Capps and Sherrer, softball student-athletes Heather Parker (1998) and Jenny Jackson (2009) earned Academic All-America first team honors.

Eight male and eight female regional scholar athlete of the year winners were selected. A male and female National Scholar Athlete of the Year will be announced in September.
