GAFFNEY, S.C.
– Senior forward
Jarrell
Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.) has been named a 2011-12 The
Sporting News Preseason All-American Honorable Mention following
one of the most impressive seasons in the men’s basketball
program’s NCAA Division II era.
“Jarrell is hopefully the first of many players at Limestone
to make the All-American list” said head coach Brandon Scott.
“I think in many ways it is a great honor, but I also think
Jarrell should use this as motivation. He averaged better than 20
points and eight rebounds last year, putting together one of the
best statistical seasons in Limestone's basketball history. I feel
like with those numbers and our success as a team last year that he
deserved to be on the First or Second team, so I am hoping it
motivates him to prove himself even more as a player and as a
leader this year. Jarrell is one of many good players on our team
this year who feel like they have a lot to prove as individuals and
as a team.”
Douglass earned the accolade in large part to his tremendous
2010-11 campaign. That season he averaged 20.3 points, 8.4
rebounds, 2.5 assists and shot .553 from the field as Limestone
went 23-7, won the Conference Carolinas Tournament and made the
NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
This adds to his collection of national and regional awards from
last season as he was named D2 Bulletin All-American Honorable
Mention, NABC First-Team All-Southeast District and Daktronics
All-Southeast Region Second-Team. In Conference Carolinas, Douglass
was Tournament Most Valuable Player, a First-Team selection and was
twice named Player of the Week. He finished last season ranked 28th
in scoring, 48th in field goal percentage and 51st in rebounds.
Douglass is one of 48 Division II players nationwide to be named to
one of The Sporting News preseason team and is one of 38 players on
the Honorable Mention list. He joins fellow Conference Carolinas
members Daniel Bailey (Queens), Brent Evans (Queens), Greg Hayes
(Mount Olive) and Derek Staton (Mount Olive) as an Honorable
Mention.
It is the first such recognition of his career.
