Coker Finishes 18th at NCAA Regional, Fuga Places 10th
Overall
CONOVER, N.C.- Freshman Christopher
Fuga carded a one-over-par 73 in the final round of the NCAA
South/Southeast Regional on Wednesday. Fuga finished the tournament
in 10th place at even par, with a total score of 216 in the
three-round event. As a team the Cobras finished 18th overall.
Georgia College captured the team championship, followed by Barry
University in second and Nova Southeastern in third. Also advancing
to the NCAA Division II Championship were UNC Pembroke and USC
Aiken.
For the Cobras, Diego
Polo shot a 76 (+4), while Jake
Murphy and Josh
Clay each carded rounds of 77 (+5). Jared
Crane rounded out the field for Coker with a final round of 78
(+6).
Coker's season now comes to a close. They finished in the top five
in six of their 10 tournaments this season, including capturing
their second conference championship in school history and
advancing to the NCAA Regional for the first time since 2009.
Adam Hedges Finishes Tied For 19th At NCAA Regional
Belmont Abbey junior men's golfer Adam
Hedges closed with an eagle, a birdie and a par to total a 78
and finish in a tie for 19th in the final round of the 2012 NCAA
South/Southeast Regional, which was hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne at the
par 72 Rock Bottom Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina. His
three day score of 220 did not allow him to advance to the NCAA
National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky in two weeks.
Hedges opened with an even par 72 to sit in a tie for 19th, a
two under 70 in the penultimate round moved him into a tie for
eighth, ad today's 78 allowed him to finish in a tie for 19th.
In today's round, Hedges began his day with a 12:40 tee time on
the tenth tee. He double bogeyed 11 and bogeyed 13 and 14, but
birdied the par three 15th. Two straight pars came next, followed
by a double bogey on the 18th as he made the turn at five over
par.
The back nine began with a double bogey on one, followed by a
par on the second. Bogey, par, bogey, par was next, and the Hedges
made his move. He eagled the par five seventh with a score of
three, followed by a birdie on the eighth, a par four. He closed
the round with a par on the ninth as he played the back nine at one
over, and finished six over for the championship.

Barton slips back but still challenging at NCAA
Regional
by Kevin Buczek
CONOVER, N.C.-No. 21 Nike/Golf World nationally
ranked Barton College will need to rally past two teams and make up
at least a six-shot deficit heading into the final round of the
South/Southeast Regional as part of the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's
Golf Championships after slipping into a three-way tie for seventh
place after Tuesday's middle round.
The Bulldogs counted matching three-over par rounds of 75 by Dermot
McElhennon, Daniel
Claytor, Michael
Marshburn and Nicolas
Fonseca for a 12-over par round of 300. Barton was in third
place after a first round 290 but has moved back to a tie for
seventh with its 36-hole sum of 590.
Barton – ranked No. 25 in the current Golfstat
head-to-head rankings – is 10 shots behind No. 21 Georgia
College, who leads with a two-day total of 580 (+4). No. 27 Florida
Institute of Technology is in second place just one shot behind
Georgia College with a 581 (+5).
The top-five teams in the 20 team field after Wednesday's final
round will advance to the finals of the 2012 NCAA Golf
Championships in Kentucky. A trio of top-15 teams in No. 2 Barry
University, No. 4 UNC Pembroke and No. 14 USC Aiken hold the final
three coveted positions with matching totals of 584 (+8). No. 5
Lynn University holds sole possession of sixth place with a 586
(+10).
Barton is tied with and will be paired with No. 15 Florida
Southern College and No. 49 Eckerd College. The Bulldogs, Mocs and
Tritons will tee off No. 10 to begin play in the final round on
Wednesday between 12:50-1:30 p.m. Five teams ranked in the top-25
are all within five strokes of BC.
Barton was unable to duplicate its play from the first day with
several wayward tee shots on the Jones Course that demands
precision because water hazards or out of bounds comes in play on
nearly every tee box. The Bulldogs four scoring players hit six
less fairways compared to Monday. BC played the dogleg par-four,
11th hole at six-over with the only par coming from the one Bulldog
that found the fairway from the tee box. Barton also struggled on
the par-three 3rd hole that was lengthened over 200-yards by
playing it at seven-over.
McElhennon continues to lead the Bulldogs with a 36-hole total
of one-over par 70-75—145 on the 7,064-yard Jones Course
layout that also hosts the Greater Hickory Classic on the PGA
Champions Tour every fall.
McElhennon was tied for third after the first round but has
moved back to a tie for 17th place heading into the final round.
McElhennon is seven shots back of the overnight leader and five
strokes behind the second place golfers (the top two players in the
field that are not on a qualifying team will advance to the finals
as individuals).
Claytor is only one shot behind McElhennon with a two-day mark
of 71-75—146 (+2), which is good for a tie for 22nd position.
Claytor opened up his middle round with a 39 on the back nine as
three errant tee balls cost him four strokes. Claytor was able to
minimize the damage by finding the short grass on 6-of-7 drives on
his second nine to shoot a 36. Claytor continued to strike the ball
well finding the green in regulation on 14 holes for a second
straight loop around Rock Barn.
Marshburn had a team-best four birdies but they only erased a
pair of double bogeys that he suffered on his second hole of each
nine. Marshburn did the best on the greens only needing 29 putts
but his six missed fairways was the worst out of Barton's counting
scorers. The defending individual regional champion is tied for
39th with a total of 74-75—149.
Fonseca matched his first round score and is tied for 49th with
a total of 75-75—150. Fonseca, who shot a 34 on the back nine
Monday, continued his strong play on the inward nine with a 36 to
start his middle round before faltering with a 39 on the front
nine. Fonseca was the only Bulldog to hit more fairways in his
second round than his first but a pair of three-putts over his last
four holes cost him a score near level par.
McElhennon and Fonseca were the most accurate drivers of the
golf ball in the second round by each hitting 10 fairways. Both
sophomores made three birdies.
Freshman Austin
Doerr concluded play for the Bulldogs with an 87. Doerr has
missed the fairway on over half of his tee shots each round that
has cost him numerous strokes en route to his two-day total of
79-87—166.

Cobras Move to 15th After Second Round of NCAA
Regional
CONOVER, N.C.- Christopher
Fuga fired a three-under-par 69 in the second round of the NCAA
South/Southeast Regional helping the Coker men move to 15th place
on Tuesday.
With one round remaining the Cobras (598, +22) are 18 strokes
behind the leaders, Georgia College (580, +4). This should be
familiar territory for Coker, as they made up the same deficit in
the final round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament on their way
to the conference championship.
Florida Tech is in second place at 581 (+5), while UNC Pembroke,
Barry and USC Aiken are all tied for third at 584 (+8). In order
for the Cobras to advance to the NCAA National Championship they
must finish in the top five as a team.
Fuga's 69 moved him into 10th place overall, while Jake
Murphy is in 27th after carding a three-over-par 75. Diego
Polo shot a two-over 74 and Jared
Crane fired a 79 (+7). Josh
Clay rounded out the Coker golfers with an 83 (+11).
The Cobras will complete play at the par-72, 7,064 yard Rock Barn
Golf and Spa starting at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday. Fans can follow

Adam Hedges Posts Second Round 70 To Move Into Tie For Eighth
At NCAA Regional
Belmont Abbey junior men's golfer Adam
Hedges posted five birdies en route to a two-under par 70 to
vault from a tie for 19th into a tie for eighth after the second of
three rounds at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional. The three day
event is staged at the par 72 Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover,
North Carolina.
Hedges, who opened with a 72 in yesterday's first round,
completed today's round with a 69, but was informed afterwards that
he and another of his playing partners were penalized one stroke
for slow play.
The Bromely, England product began his round at 8:20 on the
first tee and posted five birdies and three bogeys, the third of
which was charged as his penalty stroke, which was recorded on the
18th hole. Hedges hit 10 of 14 fairways and posted 27 putts.
Hedges birdied the first hole after depositing a sand wedge from
109 yards to seven feet of the cup. He sank the ensuing putt. After
bogeying number two, Hedges played the next four holes level, but
birdied the next two, holes seven and eight.
On number seven, he hit two three woods, the second of which
left him in the left greenside bunker. He splashed out to six
inches and tapped in for birdie.
One hole later, a par four, he drove his tee shot to the left of
the green, pitched to six feet, and dropped the birdie putt. He
registered a par on the ninth hole to record a 34 (-2) on the front
nine.
The second nine began with a bogey sandwiched around two pars,
but then came another birdie, a three on the par four 13th. He
drove with a three wood, and his eight iron approach came to rest
eight feet away. He drained the putt for birdie.
On the par three 15th, his tee shot landed hole high, and the
ensuing putt gave him his fifth and final birdie of the day to move
to three under. Hedges parred his final three holes, but the
penalty stroke was enforced on the 18th hole, giving him a six and
a final score of 70.
Hedges enters tomorrow's final round just four shots out of the
lead. There are seven players in front of him.

No. 21 Barton begins NCAA tourney with strong
round
by Kevin Buczek
CONOVER, N.C.-Under par rounds by sophomore Dermot
McElhennon and junior Daniel
Claytor helped No. 21 Nike/Golf World nationally ranked Barton
College secure third place out of 20 teams after the opening round
of the 2012 NCAA South/Southeast Regional hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne
University at Rock Barn Golf and Spa Monday.
Barton – ranked No. 25 nationally in the current Golfstat
head-to-head rankings – is only four shots behind first place
No. 27 Florida Institute of Technology and two shots back of second
place No. 5 Lynn University with its opening round score of
two-over 290. The Bulldogs are just one shot ahead of No. 21
Georgia College and No. 22 Rollins College.
The top-5 teams in the field after the third round will advance
to the finals of the NCAA Golf Championship in Kentucky. Nearly the
whole field is still in contention of the five advancing positions
with 17 of the 20 teams posting totals under 300 and the top 19
teams all within 15 strokes of each other.
McElhennon chipped in for eagle on the par-five 18th hole to put
an exclamation point on his wild round of two-under par 70 to pace
the Royal Blue and White. McElhennon made four birdies and two
eagles including holing out his second shot on the par-4 11th hole
but four bogies and a double cost him the first round lead. The
two-time All-Conference Carolinas selection only needed 25
putts.
McElhennon is in a seven-way tie for third place just two shots
behind leader J.P. Griffin's (Georgia Southwestern) 68 and one shot
behind Taylor Smith's (Georgia) 69.
A total of 18 players broke par on the 7,064-yard, par-72 Jones
Course layout at Rock Barn that also hosts the Greater Hickory
Classic on the PGA Champions Tour every October.
Claytor fired the Bulldogs second round under par with a 71.
Claytor was contending for the lead late with three birdies and no
bogies over his first 15 holes but two consecutive bogies on 16 and
17 pushed him three behind the leader at the end of the day. The
2011 All-American played consistent by hitting a team best 14
greens in regulation.
Junior Michael
Marshburn started and finished his opening trek around the
hilly course with bogeys but he played the other 16 holes at even
par to produce a two-over 74. Marshburn set himself up well all day
by finding the fairway off the tee 12-of-14 times.
Sophomore Nicolas
Fonseca provided Barton with its fourth counting score by
carding a three-over 75. Fonseca shot a five over 41 on the front
but made a charge on the back-nine with a two under 34. Fonseca's
round was highlighted by making a 12-foot eagle putt on the very
tricky par-5 14th hole.
Freshman Austin
Doerr was even par after his outward nine but a double bogey on
14 and a triple bogey on 16 ballooned his scorecard to a 79, which
was much higher than he had played for most of the day.
The Bulldogs played the tight layout well and put themselves in
great position after the opening round by finding a lot of fairways
on a course that features hazards on most holes. BC's four counting
golfers nearly averaged 11 fairways hit out of 14.
Barton will play its middle round early Tuesday morning with the
Bulldogs teeing off between 7:30 and 8:10 a.m. on No. 10 tee. Live
stats are available on Golfstat.com.
