High Point, NC, June 12, 2012 – Conference Carolinas announced that Ashley Alderin-Fleagle of Limestone College and Jake Ternosky of Limestone College have been named the 2011-12 Conference Carolinas Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by the conference Athletics Directors.  This prestigious award is presented annually to both a male and female student-athlete in recognition of their outstanding athletic contributions and achievement.

In winning the award Limestone celebrates their third and fourth overall league Athlete of the Year winners (Racquel Prager, 2010-11 & Lauryn Wise, 2008-09) and first ever Male Athlete of the Year. This is also just the fourth time ever in league history that the same school in the same year has taken both awards (2007-08, 2005-06, and 1996-97).

Ashley Alderin-Fleagle, Limestone

On the women’s side, senior women's soccer midfielder Ashley Alderin-Fleagle in 2011 alone became one of the most decorated female athletes in the history of Limestone College Athletics. A high quality player on the soccer field for her career, Fleagle became one of the best players in the country as she tied for the NCAA Division II lead with an NCAA era program record 20 goals in 19 games. Along with 46 points, six assists and six game-winning goals, her efforts netted considerable national and regional recognition.

Alderin-Fleagle became Limestone women’s soccer’s first Daktronics First-Team All-American and first Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Player of the Year. The Kernersville, NC native was also named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region First-Team, NSCAA All-Southeast Region First-Team and All-Conference Carolinas First-Team. Fleagle ranked in the top-five in the nation in four different categories, including, Total Goals (No. 1 - 20), Points Per Game (No. 2 - 2.42), Goals Per Game (No. 3 - 1.053) and Total Points (No. 4 - 46). She was also sixth in game-winning goals and was only two such scores away from tying for second in the country.

Alderin-Fleagle led Conference Carolinas in goals and points, was second in game-winning goals and tied for fourth in assists. She helped lead Limestone to a program-best 13-5-1 overall record and 9-3 mark in league play. She was named to not only the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team for women’s soccer but was also chosen as that sport’s Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year.

She was recently selected as a Conference Carolinas nominee for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as selected by conference officials. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award recognizes excellence in leadership, athletics, academics and service.

Jake Ternosky, Limestone

In winning the Male Athlete of the Year award, junior faceoff specialist Jake Ternosky from LaFayette, N.Y., compiled one of the most impressive seasons in the history of the storied Limestone men’s lacrosse program. Ternosky garnered major national recognition while also helping to lead the men’s lacrosse team to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game and a program record 17 wins. On the season he won 234 of his 358 faceoff opportunities, finishing No. 2 in the nation with 153 more attempts than the national leader and No. 14 with 101 groundballs.

Among the many awards those performances earned him were USILA’s Specialty Player of the Year and First-Team All-American status along with becoming the first faceoff specialist to be named Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and possibly one of the first to accomplish the feat nationwide. Ternosky was also named All-Conference Carolinas First-Team and Conference Carolinas All-Tournament as he led the Saints to the 2012 regular season and tournament championships.

While also earning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week on March 6, Ternosky was named Nike National Player of the Week on March 9. In league action his groundball total was 25 more than his nearest competitor while his groundball total was over 100 more than the second highest total.
