SATURDAY’S MOUNT OLIVE-LIMESTONE BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER TO SERVE AS FUND-RAISER FOR KEVIN WISE, JR. MEMORIAL ENDOWED ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND AT MOUNT OLIVE COLLEGE

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Saturday’s Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader between nationally second-ranked Mount Olive College and Limestone College will serve as a fund-raiser for the Kevin Wise, Jr. Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund at Mount Olive College. Game one begins at noon at Scarborough Field, followed by game two approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.

Kevin Wise, Jr. was a student at Southern Wayne High School and a centerfielder on the Saints baseball team. Kevin had a promising baseball future and had already secured a full ride to University of North Carolina, the top-ranked Division I team in the nation this season. He had even received an offer from the Atlanta Braves, but opted to attend UNC.

On February 18, 2012, just two weeks after being announced as a co-winner of the Jerry Narron Award at that year’s Hot Stove Banquet, Kevin passed away unexpectedly.

To honor Kevin’s memory, his mother, Elizabeth Waters Wise, and his grandparents, Charles and Elsie Swinson, have established the Kevin Wise, Jr. Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund at Mount Olive College. The Scholarship Fund was established this past February on the one-year anniversary of Kevin’s passing.

This Saturday, baseball fans have an opportunity to watch exciting action as the Trojans continue their quest for their fourth consecutive conference title and their seventh NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in the last eight years. Mount Olive tied for third in the nation at the 2011 NCAA II National Finals at Cary and won the 2008 NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship at Sauget, Ill.

In addition, fans will have the opportunity to contribute to the Kevin Wise, Jr. Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund. All proceeds from the games – gate, concession stand, collections – will go towards the Scholarship Fund.

A devout Christian, Kevin had the verse Luke 1:37 tattooed on his arm: “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” MOC Director of Planned Giving Dwayne McKay says that Kevin’s faith, along with the fact that Kevin’s mother and both of Kevin’s aunts attended Mount Olive, make the Scholarship Fund a fitting way to honor Kevin’s memory.

“Kevin’s understandings of the importance of an education, his love of baseball and his faith in Jesus Christ are all reasons the endowed scholarship at Mount Olive College is such a perfect way to memorialize his life,” said McKay. “And a Mount Olive College baseball game is the perfect backdrop for a fund-raiser for a Scholarship Fund dedicated to Kevin.

Those who want to contribute to the Kevin Wise, Jr. Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund at Mount Olive College, but are unable to attend Saturday’s games can contact Dwayne McKay at 919-658-7757 or email him at dmckay@moc.edu.
