After falling behind 4-0 through three and a half innings, the Cobras cut the Grand Canyon lead in half, 4-2, with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Coker's first run came on a sacrifice fly by Fico Kondla, while an RBI triple byErnie Kirkwood drove in the second.

The 'Lopes tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth to take the 7-2 lead. Zach Loraine shut down the Grand Canyon offense over the next 4.1 innings, but the 'Lopes were able to push across the final three runs of the game in the top of the ninth for a 10-2 victory.

Coker's starter Tyler Witzel (7-6) took the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts in four innings on the hill.

At the plate, Kirkwood went 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI. Kondla drove in Coker's other run, while Justin Blechle, Keith Wolf, Brinley Griffin and T.J. Giczkowski each picked up a hit.

The Cobras finish the season as the 2013 NCAA Southeast Region Champion, the 2013 Conference Carolinas Tournament Champion and as the No. 3 team in nation. This was also the first time Coker had advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship.

Cobras Advance to Regional Championship Game with 5-3 Win Over Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Freshman Alex Hernandez threw six stellar innings of baseball, leading the No. 4 seed Coker Cobras to a 5-3 win over No. 1 seed Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday (May 18) at the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Baseball Tournament.

The win advances the Cobras to the NCAA Southeast Region Tournament Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Coker (37-14) awaits the winner of the tonight's elimination game at 7 p.m. between Mount Olive (48-7) and the winner of the 3 p.m. game against the No. 2 seed USC Aiken and the No. 5 seed Georgia College.

Hernandez (6-2) allowed just two runs on two hits with a strikeout in six innings on the mound and had the Trojan hitters guessing all day. Zach Loraine (15) earned his 15th save of the season, throwing two shut out innings. He gave up two hits and had three punch-outs.

After three scoreless innings, the Cobras got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth. Loraine led of the inning with a double to right center. A deep fly ball by T.J. Giczkowski moved Loraine to third with one out. Fico Kondla followed with a bunt single that scored Loraine, to give the Cobras the 1-0 lead. Ernie Kirkwood singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Frank Suarez brought home the second run with a fielder's choice to make it a 2-0 game.

A scoreless fifth, gave way to the sixth, where Coker added two more runs, both unearned on an error by the Trojans. An RBI single by Giczkowski in the top of the seventh made it 5-0 in favor of the Cobras. Mount Olive tacked on their first runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-2.

Another Trojan run in the bottom of the eighth made it 5-3, but a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play by Loriane and Suarez ended the Trojan rally. Loraine then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth, earning his nation leading 15th save.

Kirkwood was the Cobras leading hitter, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Kondla and Giczkowski had a pair of hits and drove in a run each, while Loraine had two hits, including a double with a run scored.

The Cobras have now knocked off the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the NCAA Southeast Regional.

Mount Olive's Season Ends In Walk-Off 2-1 Loss To Georgia College

Georgia College pitcher Christian Bragg outdueled Mount Olive College pitcher Derek Justice and Rob Hogencamp drove in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the fifth-seeded Bobcats defeated the top-seeded and nationally top-ranked Trojans 2-1 in an elimination game in the Southeast Regional of the 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Saturday at Mount Olive, N.C. Mount Olive College is the host for the regional.

The win, Georgia College's (36-18) third in a row in elimination games, moves the Bobcats to the championship game Sunday against fourth-seeded and tournament unbeaten Coker. Georgia College needs to beat Coker twice to win the regional title, while Coker needs only one win. Mount Olive is eliminated from the regional.

Due to weather forecasts for Sunday, the championship game has been moved up to 11 a.m. at Scarborough Field.

Justice (4-2) took a five-hitter into the ninth inning, allowing only a run in the second inning on Steve Hazel's rbi-infield single. Justice rebounded after being unable to get out of the first inning in Mount Olive's first game of the day against Coker. He had retired 12 of 13 batters going into the ninth and got a groundout to open the ninth before Georgia College put together its game-winning rally.

Jeremy Donaldson and Mikee Moore laced back-to-back singles and Moore advanced to second on the throw. With first base open, Hazel was walked to set up a force at the plate or a double play ball. Hogencamp hit a high chopper through the right side to bring pinch-runner John Welborn home with the winning run.

Bragg (5-2) held Mount Olive hitless until Daniel Oliver singled with two outs in the top of the fourth. Bragg, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Georgia College's 9-2 win over USC Aiken earlier in the day, went the distance, striking out four and finishing with a six-hitter.

The Trojans tied the game and broke up Bragg's shutout bid in the top of the seventh as Bryan Dunlavey led off with a single and stole second, his 34th stolen base of the season. Dunlavey went to third on Zak Orrison's sacrifice and scored on Matt Petrone's single deep in the hole at short. Bragg ended the threat with a 6-4-3 double play.

Mount Olive's 48 wins are tied for the third highest single-season total in school history. Mount Olive went 58-6 in the Trojans' national championship season in 2008 and recorded 49 wins in 2007.

The winner of the Southeast Regional joins the other seven regional champions in the National Finals at USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Mount Olive College and Town of Cary are co-hosts of the National Finals for the fifth consecutive year. The National Finals begin Saturday and run through June 1.

Coker Defeats USC Aiken 2-1 with Walk-Off in the Tenth

Coker 2, USC Aiken 1 (10 innings) Recap | Box

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – In the bottom of the tenth inning with the score tied at one, Shea Bell drew a bases loaded walk to score Fico Kondla and give the No. 4 seed Coker Cobras a 2-1 win over the No. 2 seed USC Aiken Pacers on Friday (May 17) night at the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Baseball Tournament.

With the win, nationally ranked No. 29 Coker (36-14) moves on to play the No. 1 seed Mount Olive in a battle of undefeated teams on Saturday (May 18) at 11 a.m. Nationally ranked No. 3 USCA (42-12) drops to an elimination game and will take on the No. 5 seed Georgia College at 3 p.m.

It was a pitching duel between the Cobras and the Pacers, with either team willing to give an inch to the other.

Coker starter Tyler Witzel pitched the game of this career as he kept the Pacers off-balance for 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on nine hits with three strikeouts. He gave way to the eventual winning pitcher, Zach Loraine (5-2), in the seventh. Loraine closed out the game allowing just one hit with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

On the other side of the field, Aiken starter Derek Beasley (9-2) went nine full innings allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Although Beasley is tagged with the loss, Pacer closer Taylor Grover walked two batters and hit another to allow the game-winning run.

It took three and a half innings before Coker scored the first run of the ball game on an RBI single by Kondla. After a scoreless fifth, Aiken tied the ball game at one.

The score remained deadlocked at one for the next three and a half innings. Then in the top of the tenth, Kondla led off the inning with a double into left center. Grover then issued a walk to Ernie Kirkwood, he hit Frank Suarez in the back, and then walked Bell to bring home Kondla for the game-winner.

Kondla finished the night 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Zach Loraine also had two hits and scored a run. Bell and T.J. Gizckowski had the other two hits for the Cobras.

When asked about the win, Coach Dave Schmotzer said, "This is just an amazing ride. We fought hard tonight and it started with Witzel on the mound. He gave us a chance to win and we beat a very good USC Aiken ball club."

Trojans Defeat Armstrong 7-3 - Remain Unbeaten In Southeast Regional

Daniel Oliver's sixth-inning three-run homer put Mount Olive ahead to stay and shortstop Mike Mercurio thwarted a rally with an unassisted double play as the top-seeded and the nationally top-ranked Trojans remained unbeaten with a 7-3 victory over No. 4 seed Armstrong Atlantic State University in the Southeast Regional of the 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Friday at Mount Olive, N.C. Mount Olive College is the host for the regional.

Mount Olive (48-6) advances to the winner's bracket final Saturday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Friday night's contest between No. 2 seed USC Aiken and No. 4 seed Coker. Armstrong (31-17) is eliminated from the regional.

Trailing 3-1 going into the top of the sixth, Mount Olive had runners on first and second with nobody out as Mercurio drew a leadoff walk and Jermaine Berrysingled to center. Armstrong starter Chris Base (4-5) retired the next two batters on a flyout to right field and a strikeout before Oliver turned the tide in the game. Oliver blasted a 1-1 pitch high over the fence down the left field line and the third base umpire signaled fair ball as the Trojans took their first lead at 4-3. The home run was Oliver's eighth of the season.

Mount Olive added two more runs in the seventh on rbi-singles by Berry and Geno Escalante, and Oliver narrowly missed another three-run homer as his drive was ruled just outside the left field foul pole. Escalante added an opposite-field home run to right in the ninth, his 10th home run of the season.

Armstrong collected 12 hits off of Trojan starter Matt Dillon (11-1), who went the distance and benefited from defensive help. Trojan left fielder Matt Petrone had two assists as Mercurio relayed a throw to nail a runner at second base in the third inning and Berry relayed a throw in the fifth to gun down a runner at the plate. Chris Fritts and Casey Sherlin had rbi-singles for Armstrong to give the Pirates an early lead.

The Pirates put runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth as Chase Butler beat out an infield single and R.J. Dennard drew a walk. Clayton Miller followed with a line drive to the left side and Mercurio went up to attempt a leaping catch. The ball was in Mercurio's webbing, but came out after he landed on the infield dirt. Mercurio picked up the ball, tagged Butler and stepped on second for the double play. Dillon got one of his seven strikeouts to end the inning.

Mount Olive goes into day three unbeaten for the second time in the last three years and the fourth time in the Trojans' last five NCAA II Southeast Regional appearances.
