Individual Awards for 2015 Men's Indoor Track and Field Announced
High Point, NC – Conference
Carolinas announces the individual award winners following this
past weekend’s Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field
Championships. Awards include Track Most Valuable Performer, Field
Most Valuable Performer, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the
Year for both the men and women. Head coaches from conference
member institutions nominate and then vote post-championship on the
award winners who represent the best of the best for the
league.
Men’s Track Most Valuable
Performer
Austin Steagall Mount Olive
Austin Steagall was University of Mount Olive’s top points
scorer as he helped lead the Trojans to their second straight
Conference Carolinas Men’s Indoor Track and Field
Championship. A senior from Gaffney, S.C., Steagall finished first
in the 3000 meters and earned second place finishes in the mile run
and the 5000 meters for a total of 26 points
Men’s Field Most Valuable
Performer
Terry Davis, North Greenville
Terry Davis turned in another excellent performance this past
weekend at the Conference Championships. Davis Won the the TJ,
placed 2nd in the LJ and 4th in the HJ. these performance totaled
23 points, the most of any field event athlete. Terry's season
performances have him provisional qualified for the TJ and LJ
(Currently ranked 12th in the TJ and 32nd in LJ). His Coach
summed Terry up this way "Terry's continued development is so
exciting. His positiveattitude and competitive spirit have helpped
him get to this point".
Men’s Freshman of the
Year
Marquett Simmons, Limestone
Capping off what proved to be a phenomenal freshman season,
Limestone’s Marquett Simmons Jr. solidified his standing
across the country from the very beginning of the 2014-15 season.
In his first ever collegiate meet, Simmons Jr. set a school record
and automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 60m dash. Later in the
year he set a school record in the 200m dash with a provisional
NCAA qualifying time, and was also a member of Limestone’s
school record setting 4x400m relay group. In the 2015 Conference
Carolinas championships, Simmons Jr. scored 24 total points with
second place finishes in the 60m and 200m dashes, and fifth place
finishes in the 400m dash and long jump event. He was also the
anchor to the 4x400m relay team that won silver.
Men’s Coach of the
Year
Matt van Lierop, Mount Olive
Matt van Lierop adds two more trophies to his mantelpiece,
earning Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors
for the second straight year and winning Women’s Indoor Track
and Field Coach of the Year for the first time. Coach van Lierop
has now won all four Conference Carolinas track and field coach of
the year awards: men’s indoor, women’s indoor,
men’s outdoor and women’s outdoor. The University of
Mount Olive men’s team spent the final three weeks of the
regular season ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Division II Men’s
Indoor Track and Field Southeast Region Top 10. The Trojan
women’s team spent the final two weeks ranked No. 3 in the
USTFCCCA Division II Women’s Indoor Track and Field Southeast
Region Top 10.
