Men's Outdoor Track & Field Awards Announced

High Point, N.C. – Conference Carolinas announces the individual award winners following the 2015 Conference Carolinas Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Awards include Track Most Valuable Performer, Field Most Valuable Performer, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year. Head coaches from conference member institutions nominate and then vote post-championship on the award winners who represent the best of the best for the league.

 

Men’s Track Most Valuable Performer

Michael Munoz, Mount Olive

Michael Munoz earned points in five events to help lead regionally top-ranked University of Mount Olive to its second straight Conference Carolinas Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Munoz finished first out of 15 runners in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:56.11. He also finished third out of 19 runners in the 3000 meters with a time of 15:46.41. He finished fourth in both the 10,000 meters and the 1500 meters, and placed seventh in the 800 meters. Munoz amassed a total of 28 points for the Trojans.

Men’s Field Most Valuable Performer

Angus Sinclair, Mount Olive

Angus Sinclair earned points in five events to help lead regionally top-ranked University of Mount Olive to its second straight Conference Carolinas Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Sinclair finished second out of 19 throwers in the javelin with a distance of 46.39 meters. He also finished second out of 10 competitors in the high jump with a distance of 2.00 meters. Sinclair amassed a total of 24 points with a fifth-place finish in the discus, a sixth-place finish in the long jump and an eighth-place finish in the pole vault.

 
 

Men’s Freshman of the Year

Marquett Simmons, Jr., Limestone

With four gold medals, Marquett Simmons Jr. scored more points than any other individual at the 2015 Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships. In the individual events, Simmons Jr. won first place in the 100m and 200m dashes, and also walked away with the gold in the long jump. He went on to combine with a trio of teammates to win the 4x100m relay event as well. His marks in all four events were not only school records, but each one was a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

 

Men’s Coach of the Year

Matt van Lierop, Mount Olive

Matt van Lierop guided University of Mount Olive not only to its second consecutive Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but also a sweep of both the men’s and women’s outdoor and indoor titles for the second consecutive year. The Trojans won the women’s outdoor championship by 50 points and more than doubled the point total of the second-place finisher in the men’s championship.
