Women's Outdoor Track & Field Awards Announced

High Point, N.C. – Conference Carolinas announces the individual award winners following the 2015 Conference Carolinas Outdoor Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Championships. Awards include Track Most Valuable Performer, Field Most Valuable Performer, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year for both the men and women. Head coaches from conference member institutions nominate and then vote post-championship on the award winners who represent the best of the best for the league.

 

Women’s Track Most Valuable Performer

 Breyuana Kittrell, Barton

Barton’s Breyuana Kittrell earned a sweep of the sprint races at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships, taking first place in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter dashes. The LaGrange, N.C., resident set a Barton College school record in all three events during the meet and achieved an NCAA provisional mark in the 400 with a time of 55.69 seconds that ranks among the top 25 nationally. In addition to her individual achievements, she also ran the anchor leg for the 4x400-meter relay team which won that event by six seconds over the nearest competition. Kittrell completed her outstanding career with 13 individual all-conference awards (eight outdoors) and was part of six all-conference relay performances (three outdoors).

 

Women’s Field Most Valuable Performer

Maegan Henry, King

For the fourth time in two years, King University women’s track and field star, Maegan Henry has garnered Conference Carolinas Women’s Field Most Valuable Performer honors. Henry earned a pair of victories at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to earn the award for the second straight year.


Henry, a senior earns the distinction of most valuable field performer at the outdoor meet for the second straight season, this coming after repeating as the indoor field most valuable performer earlier this spring. The Bluefield, Va., native capped her career in the Scarlet and Navy by taking two titles, a second and fourth place finish at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2015, she repeated as conference champion in the shot put with a mark of 13.64 meters. Henry also won the discus throw for the first time in her career with a toss of 36.37 meters.


She nearly repeated in the hammer throw, taking second with a toss of 47.75 meters, only 0.15 meters away from the medalists throw. Her final even was the javelin where she took fourth with a toss of 30.88 meters. Henry scored 33 points for the Tornado as the finished fourth at the meet.

 
 

Women’s Freshman of the Year

Rebecca Farnsley, Mount Olive

Rebecca Farnsley contributed 13 points with a pair of top four finishes to University of Mount Olive’s second consecutive Conference Carolinas Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Farnsley earned eight points after finishing second out of 13 runners in the 10,000 meters with a time of 41:03.01. She added a fourth-place finish out of 15 runners in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:46.01.

 

Women’s Coach of the Year

Matt van Lierop, Mount Olive

Matt van Lierop guided University of Mount Olive not only to its second consecutive Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but also a sweep of both the men’s and women’s outdoor and indoor titles for the second consecutive year. The Trojans won the women’s outdoor championship by 50 points and more than doubled the point total of the second-place finisher in the men’s championship.
