Erskine Selected as Preseason Favorite to Win 2015 Women's Volleyball Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet was selected to win the 2015 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Championship, the league announced today. The Fleet collected seven first-place votes and 79 total points in the preseason poll from conference coaches.

Erskine is coming off a historic 2014 season, which saw the team set a single-season record for wins and make its first-ever trip to the NCAA Regionals.  The Fleet won the South Division title after going 21-9 overall and 14-2 in conference play. Erskine also made history in 2014 by winning its first-ever conference tournament title.

Coming in second is Limestone with 72 points and two first-place votes. The Saints went 16-16 overall in 2014, but finished runner-up in the South Division after turning in a 13-3 Conference Carolinas record.

King, the 2014 North Division champion, was tabbed No. 3 in the preseason poll after racking up 65 points and one first-place vote. The Tornado turned in a 22-11 overall record and 12-4 conference mark in 2014.

Lees-McRae was selected fourth after colleting 56 points, while Belmont Abbey was picked fifth by coaches with 53 points.

The Bobcats finished 2014 with a 19-10 overall record and 11-5 conference record. The Crusaders wrapped up the 2014 campaign 14-17 overall and 10-6 in Conference Carolinas play.

Barton enters 2015 in the No. 6 spot with 37 points, while North Greenville and Mount Olive ranked seventh and eighth with 31 and 30 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs concluded 2014 at 9-18 and 7-9 in conference play. The Crusaders wrapped up 2014 with a 19-14 overall record and 5-11 Conference Carolinas mark. Mount Olive finished 2014 7-25 overall and 3-13 in conference play.

Rounding out the poll was Pfeiffer ninth with 15 points and Converse tenth with nine points.

The Falcons turned in a 3-22 overall record and 2-14 Conference Carolinas record in 2014, while Converse finished 7-23 overall and 1-15 in conference play.

The 2015 Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball season begins on Friday, Sept. 4.

Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletics conference made up of 12 teams from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey, Converse College, Emmanuel College, Erskine College, King University, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, University of Mount Olive, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Southern Wesleyan. Emmanuel College and Southern Wesleyan University are currently completing the NCAA Membership Process and will be fully competing in league championships in the near future.
