2016 Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track & Field Awards Announced
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The 2016 Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track and Field Major Awards have been announced today. University of Mount Olive's Austin Steagall was voted the 2016 Conference Carolinas Men's Track Most Valuable Performer. North Greenville University's Terry Davis was named the 2016 Field Most Valuable Performer, while teammate Stanley Limoh took home Freshman of the Year regcognition. Limestone mentor Joe Wassink was tabbed the Men's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Steagall wins the Conference Carolinas Indoor Men’s Track Most Valuable Performer award for the second year in a row and becomes University of Mount Olive’s first-ever two-time conference MVP for track and field. Steagall compiled 24 points for Mount Olive by finishing first in the 5000-meter run for 10 points to go with a second-place finish in the 3000-meter run and a fourth-place finish in the mile run. Steagall also helped the Trojans earn 10 points for a first-place finish in the distance medley relay.
Davis continues his solid career at North Greenville with another Conference Carolinas accolade. The junior won first-place at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships in the triple jump and long jump with personal record distances of 15.13m and 7.12m, respectively. He also earned a second-place finish in the high jump. He is seeded 12th in the country for the triple jump and will take part in his third NCAA National Championship in March.
Stanley Limoh bursted onto the scene for NGU as one of its best distance runners. The freshman has continued to improve, setting new records every race. Limoh has personal records in the mile and 3000-meter run with times of 4:14 and 8:33, respectively. Limoh was also part of NGU’s first-place distance medley relay team and earned a second-place finish in the mile run at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Wassink takes home the 2016 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award after leading the Saints to their first-ever Conference title in the sport. Following multiple runner-up finishes over that past couple of years, the Saints were finally able to break the drought with an 11-point victory over the University of Mount Olive. Wassink has also led three members of his team to qualify for the 2016 NCAA nationals in Pittsburgh, Kan. later this month. He also mentored nine student-athletes to the USTFCCA All-Region team on the men’s side, with those athletes earning the distinction a total of 17 times.
Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletics conference made up of 12 teams from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Converse College, Emmanuel College, Erskine College, King University, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, University of Mount Olive, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Southern Wesleyan University. Emmanuel College and Southern Wesleyan University are currently completing the NCAA DII membership process and will be fully competing in league championships in the near future.
