2016 Conference Carolinas Baseball All-Conference and Major Awards Announced

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Barton College catcher Andrew Webster has been named the 2016 Conference Carolinas Baseball Player of the Year, while Erskine College's Joe Johnson garnered Pitcher of the Year. North Greenville University's Ethan Garner captured the Conference's Freshman of the Year and Erskine point man Kevin Nichols won the Coach of the Year, the Conference announced today.

Webster, a junior from Pittsboro, N.C., was recognized as a the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year after ranking in the top-five among conference players in batting average (.407), hits (70), home runs (10) and RBI (60).

A senior from Greenwood, S.C., Johnson helped lead the Flying Fleet to its first Conference Carolinas regular season championship after leading the Conference in wins (8) and ERA (2.30) and finishing fourth in saves (5). In conference play, Johnson went 6-2 with two saves while striking out 10.69 batters per nine innings and holding opponents to a .207 batting average.

Garner, a freshman from Jefferson, Ga., earned freshman of the year honors after turning in one of the best rookie campaigns in NGU history. Garner finished the 2016 regular season with a 5-2 record overall, boasting a 2.76 ERA. He held opponents to a batting average of just .211 and struck out 37 batters in 45.2 innings of work. 

Nichols was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year after the Flying Fleet captured its first Conference Carolinas championship in program history. Erskine finished the regular season 36-13 and 22-5 in conference play. Erskine’s offense led the conference in batting average, hits, runs, and scoring, while the pitching staff led the conference in strikeouts and strikeouts per game.

Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athleticconference made up of 12 teams from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Converse College, Emmanuel College, Erskine College, King University, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, University of Mount OliveNorth Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Southern Wesleyan University. Emmanuel College and Southern Wesleyan University are currently completing the NCAA DII membership process and will be fully competing in league championships in the near future.
