2017 Conference Carolinas Softball All-Conference and Major Awards Announced
HIGH POINT, N.C. – For the second straight season, the Limestone College duo of Caroline Hill and Josie Weber have earned the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Makenzie Pennell of Pfeiffer University earns the Falcons their second straight Freshman of the Year, while Pfeiffer point man Monte Sherrill the Coach of the Year, the Conference announced today.
Hill, a senior for Inman, S.C., picked up her second straight Player of the Year after taking home last year’s award in her first season in the league. This season, she posted the highest batting average in conference play with an even .500 while tying for the most homeruns with six. Hill amassed a whopping .966 slugging percentage on the year while tallying 27 RBI to rank second in the conference. Hill also led the league in extra base hits (14) and total bases (56).
Weber, a junior from Stanley, N.C., turned in her second Pitcher of the Year honor in the same number of years. She posted a 0.92 ERA in league play, the lowest in the conference and her lowest in her collegiate career. Weber threw for 61 total innings, turning in a 9-1 record on the season. Weber tossed eight complete games while only allowing eight earned runs on her way to five shutout victories.
Pennell, a freshman from Taylorsville, N.C., etched her name in the record books in her rookie campaign at Pfeiffer and now holds the single season record for RBI in a season with 54. In 44 regular season games, the third basemen led the league in RBI and ranked in the top five in: home runs (10), runs (40), hits (60), total bases (102), batting average (.426), on base percentage (.459) and slugging percentage (.723).
Sherrill guided the Falcons to a program-record 40 wins in 2017 and had Pfeiffer ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation. In his second year at the helm, Sherrill helped capture the Falcons first regular season championship since the 2000 season and only the program’s third regular season crown since 1990. Sherrill is Pfeiffer’s first Coach of the Year winner in the fast pitch era (1990-current) and has amassed a 79-21 record in his two seasons.
