Limestone's Simmons and Barton's Russell Named Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C.Limestone College's Marquett Simmons Jr. and Barton College's Larry Russell have been named the Conference Carolinas Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for meets held Jan. 22 - Jan. 28, the Conference announced today.

A senior from Jonesboro, G.A., Simmons handled a full slate of events this weekend at the 2018 Liberty Kickoff with ease, coming away with three provisional qualifying marks and a new school record.  His time of 6.87 seconds in the 60m dash was good for 6th place in the meet and is the second-fastest time in Conference Carolinas so far this season.  In the 200m dash, Simmons' time of 21.62 seconds placed him atop the Conference Carolinas leaderboard and is currently the 12th-fastest time in Division II.  Simmons' final performance of the day came as part of the 4x400m relay team that ran 3:13.55 on the way to a provisional qualifying mark that is currently 4th in the nation and a new school record.

Russell, a junior from Sicklerville, N.J., posted strong performances in both of the horizontal jumps this past weekend at the 2018 Liberty Kickoff.  His winning long jump of 7.37 meters (24' 2 1/4"), which missed the facility record by just 0.03m, was good enough to put him at #5 in Division II so far this season.  As of now he is the only Conference Carolinas athlete to surpass the 7-meter mark in that event.  In the triple jump, Russell marked a 14.31 meter (46' 11 1/2") leap, which is just 0.08m off his school record and was good for 6th place.  That mark is the third-best in the league so far this season.
