Newberry's Royal Named South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestler of the Week
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Newberry College's Isiah Royal has been named the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestler of the Week for meets held during the week of Dec. 10-16, the league announced today. This marks the first POTW for Royal and the third overall for Newberry.
A sophomore from Guyton, Ga., Royal placed runner-up in the 141-pound class and led Newberry to a 23rd-place team finish at the Midwest Classic. Royal started his run with a fall in 3:23 against Ryan Schmalen of No. 5 Upper Iowa. He would then defeat Mason Schultz of Minnesota State University Moorhead with a 4-2 decision, which he followed up with an 8-0 major decision over Aiden Burke of No. 21 Mercyhurst. Royal would earn a spot in the championship match by defeating Jebben Keyes of Augustana by a score of 8-3. Royal would narrowly lose by a score of 3-2 to No. 7 nationally ranked Chandler Minnard of No. 14 Ashland to finish second in the 141 weight class.
