Conference Carolinas Unveils Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Awards at Banquet

BELMONT, N.C. – The 2019 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Awards were officially unveiled at an awards banquet on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Belmont Abbey.

The league’s head coaches picked this year’s honorees. The all-conference teams are comprised of the top vote-receivers among five position players, one libero and one setter per team.

The 2018 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Year, Julie Ward was chosen as the 2019 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Year. The Berthoud, Colo. native averaged a league-best 4.19 kills per set during conference play in helping to lead King to the West Division co-championship. Overall during the regular season, Ward averaged a league second-best 3.95 kills per set. She had 332 kills during the regular season overall. She led the conference in kills during league play with 222. Ward was also in the top 20 in the league in digs during conference play with 176. She averaged 3.26 digs per set in total during the regular season. Ward was named Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week three times during the regular season.

A sophomore out of Lawrenceville, Ga., Bailey Carpenter of Limestone was selected as the 2019 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year. Carpenter led all during conference play with 5.82 digs per set. She had 297 digs during league play. Overall on the season, Carpenter corralled a league-high 5.91 digs per set. She had 508 digs during the regular season.

Allison Gambill was selected as the 2019 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Year. An outside hitter from Hickory, N.C., Gambill averaged a league fourth-best 3.70 kills per set during conference play. She had 196 kills in total during conference play. Gambill was third-best among all in the conference overall during the regular season with 3.65 kills per set. She had 310 kills in total. Gambill was also in the top 20 in the league in the regular season in digs with 277. She averaged 3.26 digs per set during the regular season. She was also in the top 20 in the league during conference play with 3.32 digs per set and 176 digs.

Belmont Abbey’s Toni Elyea was chosen as Coach of the Year for the second straight season. The fifth-year head coach guided the Crusaders to the best overall record in Conference Carolinas at 14-2 and an East Division championship.
