GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors have agreed to continue deliberations on competing in fall intercollegiate athletics after receiving additional guidance from the NCAA Sport Science Institute on Tuesday evening.

The board unanimously affirmed the following statement on Tuesday:

The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors, having during our meeting today received new information from the NCAA pertaining to testing and other matters, will reconvene within the next week for a final decision on fall sports competition. During this time the presidents will consult with public health officials in their respective areas and determine what is the best decision with respect to our student-athletes and the potential for them to practice and compete safely.

The Board of Directors decision on continuing discussions was built around Conference Carolinas’ commitment to the development and formation of the whole person in body, mind and soul. Conference Carolinas and its member institutions believe that intercollegiate athletics prepares students to lead lives of integrity, succeed professionally and become responsible citizens.

The ability to compete in intercollegiate athletics is vital to the holistic education of all student-athletes and is central to the missions of all institutions in Conference Carolinas. Therefore, a decision to potentially postpone intercollegiate athletics competition is one that will not be made lightly and will only be made after exhausting all possible avenues for a safe resumption of intercollegiate athletics competition.

“The agreement by the Board of Directors to delay making a decision on fall sports intercollegiate athletics competition is solely due to a desire to prioritize the student-athlete and ensure that all options have been considered,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “The board will reconvene early next week after considering the impact of the updated guidance related to COVID-19 testing and exploring if there is a reasonable and safe path forward for intercollegiate athletics this fall.”
