UNC Pembroke to Compete as Associate Member in Indoor Track & Field in 2020-21
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin has announced the addition of UNC Pembroke as an Associate Member in men’s and women’s indoor track & field in the 2020-21 academic year.
The addition of UNC Pembroke as an Associate Member in men’s and women’s indoor track & field comes ahead of UNC Pembroke along with Francis Marion joining Conference Carolinas as full members in the 2021-22 academic year.
“We are excited to be able to welcome UNC Pembroke as an Associate Member in men’s and women’s indoor track & field,” Colvin said. “We are obviously very much also looking forward to UNC Pembroke joining us as a full member in 2021-22, but this unique partnership allows us to start the process of their teams competing for Conference Carolinas championships a little earlier than expected. Their addition only continues to enhance our already tremendous and very competitive indoor track & field championships.”
As an Associate Member in the 2020-21 academic year in men’s and women’s indoor track & field, UNC Pembroke is now eligible for all individual and team awards offered by Conference Carolinas in indoor track & field.
“We are excited for our track & field athletes that they will have a continued opportunity to compete for a conference championship,” UNC Pembroke Director of Athletics Dick Christy said. “They will leave a legacy now as our first program to enter into Conference Carolinas during the NCAA Division II era of UNC Pembroke. I am so appreciative to the Conference Carolinas leadership for their quick action and support.”
Both UNC Pembroke men’s and women’s indoor track & field squads are coming off of banner years as an Associate Member of the Mountain East Conference in 2019-20. The women’s squad secured their first conference title in the 25-year history of the program with a dominating performance at the MEC Championships in February, while the men’s team posted a runner-up finish at the event. The Braves have been represented at each of the last two NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as well.
“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said UNC Pembroke Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Peter Ormsby. “I can't begin to say enough about the leadership team here on campus, while also giving immense credit and thanks to Commissioner Colvin at Conference Carolinas for making this work in such a short time.”
The 2021 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships are currently scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 21 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
