Alfie Pope of Mount Olive Named United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Alfie Pope of Mount Olive has been selected as the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 3.
Pope also garnered Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Week honors this past week. A sophomore forward from London, England, Pope opened last week by scoring a goal in Mount Olive’s 3-1 home win over Shaw on Sept. 29. He followed that up by collecting a hat trick in Mount Olive’s come-from-behind home conference win over North Greenville on Oct. 2.
With Mount Olive down 2-1 to North Greenville, Pope responded by scoring all three goals over a roughly 15-minute stretch. He netted his first goal in the 57
th minute before picking up the match winner less than 10 minutes later in the 66
th minute. Pope’s final goal came in the 70
th minute. Pope leads all in Conference Carolinas with nine goals on the 2021 fall campaign.
Pope joins Carlos Navarro of North Greenville as Conference Carolinas men’s soccer student-athletes to earn the prestigious United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week honor during the 2021 calendar year. Navarro won the award during the 2021 spring season on April 13 after a four-goal and two assist week.
