FLORENCE, S.C. – The top two seeds in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Fall Men’s Soccer Championship, No. 1 Francis Marion and No. 2 Chowan, both advanced to the tournament final on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Florence Soccer Complex.
The day began with eighth-seeded Belmont Abbey looking to continue their incredible postseason run against the top-ranked Patriots. The Crusaders were up to the task for the first 45 minutes, but Francis Marion broke through in the 59th minute as Mauricio Castorino found the back of the net. With the clock winding down and the Crusaders pushing forward, the Patriots gained possession and Gil Pablo made it 2-0 with 17 seconds to play to send the Florence, South Carolina program to its first-ever Conference Carolinas championship game.
It didn’t take quite as long to get a goal in the second semifinal as Chowan’s Erik Ruiz found Tren Drexhage for the game’s only goal just 2:21 into the contest.
The Hawks controlled the game from the outset as they outshot third-seeded Mount Olive 17-9 including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal. The Murfreesboro, North Carolina program also had 14 corner kicks to the Trojans’ two. Chowan is making its second appearance in the championship game since 2018 and is looking for the program’s first-ever Conference Carolinas title since joining the league in 2017.
Francis Marion and Chowan met in Murfreesboro on October 13 and played to a 1-1 tie. A winner will be determined on Sunday.
