Ta’Jay Dunlap of Southern Wesleyan and Jay Mitchell of Converse Pick Up First Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors of 2021-22 Season
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ta’Jay Dunlap of Southern Wesleyan and Jay Mitchell of Converse have earned the first weekly honors in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball for the week ending Nov. 14.
Dunlap was selected as the Player of the Week, while Mitchell earned the first weekly honor ever for the first-year Converse men’s basketball program by taking home Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
A sophomore guard from Columbia, South Carolina, Dunlap averaged 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in Southern Wesleyan’s first two games of the 2021-22 regular season. Dunlap also shot an incredibly impressive 65 percent (17-of-26) from the field. He also shot 85 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe and 40 percent (4-of-10) from beyond the arc. In Southern Wesleyan’s season-opening win over Lander on Nov. 12, Dunlap ended his efforts with 26 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Dunlap followed that up by finishing with 23 points, five rebounds and two steals against second-ranked Flagler on Nov. 13.
A freshman from Clemmons, North Carolina, Mitchell stuffed the stat sheet in Converse’s first-ever two games by averaging 7.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. The guard blocked four shots to go along with a steal and three rebounds in Converse’s inaugural victory in a 93-82 win over Mars Hill on Nov. 12. In Converse’s game with Wingate on Nov. 13, Mitchell ended his day with six rebounds and two steals.
