UNC Pembroke, Mount Olive Qualify for NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Less than 24 hours after the two programs played for the 2021 Fall Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship, UNC Pembroke and Mount Olive have qualified for the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer National Championship which begins on Friday, Nov. 19.
UNC Pembroke is 15-4-0 and received the No. 5 seed in the Southeast Region where they will square off against fourth-seeded Flagler (15-2-1) on Friday. The winner will advance to the second round on Sunday, Nov. 21. They will face the winner of eighth-seed Mount Olive (15-1-2) and top-ranked Columbus State (10-2-1). The games will all be played at Columbus State.
The Braves are led by Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Rilee Seering and Freshman of the Year Anna Grossheim. They enter the tournament having allowed 16 goals in 19 games. They have shut out their past three opponents. The Braves average nearly three goals per game and have a .765 save percentage. This is the fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament for UNC Pembroke (2008, 2010, 2017, 2019) and their first automatic bid.
The Trojans are led by Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year Shaunalee Govia. They have allowed 12 goals in their 18 games and have netted 51. Their defense helped them to a successful regular season and their .846 save percentage was tops in the league. This will be the second NCAA Tournament appearance in women’s soccer for Mount Olive with the first coming in 2019, the last time the tournament was held.
