UNC Pembroke and Mount Olive Close Out Tremendous Fall Campaigns in NCAA Tournament
COLUMBUS, Ga. – A strong fall of 2021 for Conference Carolinas women’s soccer closed in the opening round of the Southeast Regional of the 2021 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship.
Fifth-seeded and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion UNC Pembroke concluded its season with a narrow 2-1 loss to Peach Belt Conference Tournament champion and regional fifth-seeded Flagler.
Flagler netted the first goal of the game in the 46
th minute before adding another in the 56
th minute to take a 2-0 lead. UNC Pembroke battled back into the game with a penalty kick goal in the 62
nd minute, but Flagler would narrowly hold on from there for the victory. Flagler held just a 12-10 shot advantage over UNC Pembroke, while UNC Pembroke held a commanding 10-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match.
In a battle of conference regular season champions, Peach Belt Conference regular season champion and regionally top-seeded Columbus State held off a feisty Mount Olive team, 3-1.
The Conference Carolinas regular season champions and the eighth seed in the regional, Mount Olive netted the first goal of the match in the sixth minute when Jaslyn Gott scored off an assist by Ashley Kerekes. Mount Olive would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but the nationally seventh-ranked Cougars scored three in the second half to take the two-goal win.
