Chowan Advances in NCAA Tournament in Thriller Over West Florida in Penalty Kicks
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Super-Region 2 sixth-seeded Chowan picked up its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a thrilling win over third-seeded West Florida in penalty kicks on Sunday, Nov. 21.
The match was tied 1-1 at the end of two overtimes to send things to penalty kicks. Both teams kept battling back and forth over the first few penalty kicks, but the two teams would need extra kicks with Chowan eventually taking a 13-12 advantage in the spot kicks and the ability to move on to the next round. Chowan goalkeeper Charlie Farrar saved the final kick from West Florida.
The match officially goes down as a tie in the NCAA record books, but the one-kick advantage in PKs extends Chowan's season into the third round.
The first goal of the match came on an own goal by Chowan in the 63rd minute, but just a few minutes later the Hawks evened things up in the 69th minute when Harri Lovett scored for Chowan.
Chowan will face off against Nova Southeastern in the third round. More information will be made available in the near future. The interactive tournament bracket is available
