GREENVILLE, S.C. – The opening round of the Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Championship saw No. 8 Belmont Abbey upset Barton and No. 6 North Greenville hold off Converse to advance to the quarterfinals.
Belmont Abbey, the eighth-seed in the tournament, traveled to Wilson, North Carolina to face fifth-seeded Barton and came away victorious. The game was a rematch of the spring conference championship, also won by the Crusaders by a 1-0 score. In the 6-7 matchup, North Greenville scored first in the 19th minute on a goal by Kalvin Semedo and then added a second tally in the 43rd minute off the foot of Luiz Neto. Tobias Bruecher scored the first-ever postseason goal for Valkyries men’s soccer in the 76th minute, but that was all the first-year program would get.
