Top Seeds Victorious in Women’s Soccer Championship First Round

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The top two teams in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship were victorious on Wednesday night as No. 5 Belmont Abbey and No. 6 Barton both advanced to the quarterfinals.
Barton withstood a late rally by Chowan to move on with a 3-2 win. Hailey Russell got the home team on the board first in the 18th minute. It remained 1-0 until the 60th minute when Carolina Lucci evened the score. Lexis Goldberg put the Bulldogs back in front in the 73rd minute, but it was short lived as Lucci added another goal in the 77th minute. The game winner came in the 86th minute as Evie Kenna found the top left corner of the net off a corner kick for the 3-2 win.
In Belmont, North Carolina, the game was in the balance until the 53rd minute when Logan Parry put the home Crusaders in front. Six minutes later, Goose Anderews added another Belmont Abbey goal for the 2-0 margin.
The Bulldogs will travel to Tigerville, South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 6 to face third-seeded North Greenville at 1 p.m. while Belmont Abbey will travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina to face No. 4 Lees-McRae at 2 p.m.
