GREENVILLE, S.C. – Fifth-seeded Belmont Abbey pulled off the upset in overtime and No. 3 seed North Greenville went to penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship.
No. 3 seed North Greenville needed penalty kicks to get past No. 6 Barton. The host Crusaders got off to a fast start with a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs answered with two goals in a two-minute span in the 31st and 33rd minutes to even the score. A penalty kick goal for the home team 56 seconds before the half made it 3-2. Barton drew even in the 82nd minute to eventually force penalty kicks after neither team could score through the two overtime periods. North Greenville made all five of its attempts while the Crusaders keeper Lizzy Luzzi made a save on the first Barton attempt for the win.
It was a completely different game in Banner Elk, North Carolina as No. 4 Lees-McRae and No. 5 Belmont Abbey played to a scoreless tie in regulation. Then in the 95th minute, KB Briones netted the game-winner in overtime to send the Crusaders to the semifinals.
