BELMONT, N.C. - Top-seeded Belmont Abbey women's basketball picked up its first Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship since the 2002 season with a thrilling 68-62 win in overtime over second-seeded Barton.
Currently ranked first and second in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings and also ranked in the top 25 in the latest D2SIDA national rankings, the game between Belmont Abbey and Barton lived up to its billing with the two teams extending the game into an extra period to determine the winner. Belmont Abbey outscored Barton, 11-5, in overtime to secure the tournament title.
Winners of 18 straight games, Belmont Abbey, who is also ranked 21st in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II poll, collected its sixth tournament title overall with the overtime win over Barton.
Belmont Abbey and Barton will both next learn of its seeding and opponent in the upcoming NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Southeast Regional that will be contested at Holt Fieldhouse on the campus of Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
