Men's Tennis Championship Gets Underway on Friday

SUMTER, S.C. – Barton used the momentum from their opening round victory to upset Southern Wesleyan in the Quarterfinals of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Men’s Tennis Championship on Day one at the Palmetto Tennis Complex.

Fifth-seeded Barton will face top-seed Mount Olive as the two rivals square off in Semifinals #1. The second-seed Belmont Abbey will take on third-seeded Emmanuel in Semifinals #2.

Opening Round
#5 Barton 4, #8 King 0

Barton quickly earned the doubles point to start off the match winning No. 3 doubles by default and picking up a 6-0 win at No. 1.
Alessandro Gerbino and Gustavo Camelo picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to take the match after the Bulldogs won at No. 6 singles by default

#6 Lees-McRae 4, #7 North Greenville 3

Lees-McRae fought for the early advantage in doubles action as Jofre Tura-Campalans and Landon Church picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. North Greenville won No. 3 doubles by default to square up the doubles portion. Hanqing Wang and Miodrag Popovic sealed the doubles point with a 7-6(5) win at No. 2.

North Greenville took a 2-1 lead with defaults at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.  Landon Church and Jofre Tura-Campalans rallied after dropping the second sets to clinch the victory for Lees-McRae taking the third sets 6-4 and 6-1 respectively.

Quarterfinals

#3 Emmanuel 4, #6 Lees-McRae 0

Emmanuel earned the doubles point as Joan Grosset and Lucas Sasaki won 6-3 at the No. 1 position. The Lions picked up the default win at No. 3.

The Lions needed just one singles win by Manav Sreekumar at the No. 3 position (6-3, 6-0) to advance after picking up default wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

#5 Barton 4, #4 Southern Wesleyan 3

Alessandro Gerbino and Matteo Savio clinched the match for Barton rallying back from first set deficits to win in three sets at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles position.  Gerbino rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to take the set 7-5.

Southern Wesleyan posted three straight singles victories as Jonas Grasmeuck and Enzo Marcheschi grinded out three set victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions.
