Five Men's Conference Carolinas Basketball Players Named to NCCSIA All-State Team
PEMBROKE, N.C. - The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2011-12 College Division All-State Men’s Basketball Team on Tuesday. Queens Univeristy of Charlotte's Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) was named to the second team.
Ten players representing eight different North Carolina Colleges and Universities have been named to the 2011-12 NCCSIA College Division All-State Teams. Mount Olive and UNC Pembroke led the way with two selections apiece, while Mount Olive forward Craig Hayes was the only unanimous selection to the squad.
Hayes, a senior from Woodbridge, Va., averaged 19.2 points per game this season on the strength of 60.5 percent shooting from the field, including a deadly 43.4 percent accuracy from the perimeter. The 2011-12 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and 2011-12 Daktronics all-region honoree, Hayes ranked 12th, nationally, in field goal percentage and 35th in scoring. He was the only player in Conference Carolinas to rank among the top-6 league leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage.
Jamie Vaughn, a Tallahassee, Fla., product, booked 15.4 points, 2.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game for Wingate en route to first team all-South Atlantic Conference and SAC All-Tournament team recognition. The three-time all-conference selection posted double-digit scoring in each of his last seven games, including all three games in the SAC Tournament and both appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Colerain product Keon Moore averaged 21.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals for Catawba this season, while canning better than 45 percent of his field goal attempts and 87 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe. The sophomore finished 12th nationally and second among league leaders in scoring and was, twice, named SAC Player of the Week, including one nod after registering a career-high 41 points against Queens – a feat that also included a 25-of-26 success rate from the free throw line.
Justin Glover, an all-CIAA selection and CIAA Tournament most valuable player, scored better than 15 points (15.2) per game this season for Winston-Salem State, while also averaging 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals an outing. A four-time CIAA Rookie of the Week selection, Glover posted double-figure point totals in 28 games this season, including a season-best 25 points against Fayetteville State.
In addition to the first team honorees, five players garnered second team all-state laurels. That list includes UNC Pembroke guards Shahmel Brackett and Marcus Heath, Mount Olive guard Derek Staton, Queens guard Daniel Bailey and Pfeiffer guard Danny Smith.
