Demetria Bland of Chowan and Shanika Peterkin of Barton Named Women’s Basketball Weekly Award Winners
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Demetria Bland of Chowan and Shanika Peterkin of Barton have earned the weekly honors in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball for the week ending Jan. 9.
Bland was selected as the Player of the Week, while Peterkin earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Bland, a junior guard from Williamston, North Carolina, averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in leading the Hawks to a pair of road wins. She began the week with 14 points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist in a 62-54 win over UNC Pembroke on Jan. 4 to draw even with the Braves in the standings. She finished the week with 17 points and seven rebounds, one assist and a steal in a 63-51 win over Converse on Jan. 7. She shot 8-for-20 (40 percent) from the field and 4-for-11 (36 percent) from long-range on the week.
A senior center from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Peterkin earned her fifth Player of the Week honor, fourth defensive selection and second straight as she recorded a double-double in her only game of the week. In a 60-47 win over Converse on Jan. 8, Peterkin scored a game-high 19 points and a Conference Carolinas single-game season high 24 rebounds (11 offensive, 13 defensive) to go with five blocked shots, three steals and two assists.
