Belmont, N.C./Franklin Springs, Ga. – The 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship kicked off on Wednesday night and fifth-seeded Belmont Abbey and six-seed Emmanuel each advanced to the second round.
In Belmont, the host Crusaders (9-7-2) scored early in both halves to defeat eighth-seeded Chowan (5-10-2). Goose Andrews got the scoring started in the second minute as she placed a pass from Anna Richard in the lower left corner for the early advantage. Andrews was at it again in the second half as she scored in the 57th minute with a ball in the upper right 90 for the 2-0 margin. Belmont Abbey dominated the contest to the tune of a 19-7 shot margin which included an 11-2 advantage in shots on frame. The Crusaders also attempted 10 corner kicks to the Hawks’ two. Lauryn Harding made a pair of saves for the home team while Chowan keeper Kirsten Peterson made six saves in the loss.
Belmont Abbey advances to face No. 4 Lees-McRae in the second round on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, in Franklin Springs the host Lions (9-8-1) scored two goals in the opening 14 minutes to book their spot in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over No. 7 seed Barton (5-8-2). Allie Windom got the scoring started as she beat the keeper to the lower left corner in the 11th minute for the 1-0 lead. Then, two minutes later, Zoe Logue fed Viki Lederer who placed a shot in the upper right 90 for the 2-0 margin. Barton outshot Emmanuel 10-9 in the contest, but the Lions held a slim 5-4 edge in shots on goal and corner kicks. Emmanuel keeper Hannah Thompson made four saves in the win.
Emmanuel advances to play No. 3 UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Pembroke, North Carolina.
