Spectacular Second Season for Converse Concludes in NCAA Tournament
Box Score
HICKORY, N.C. - Converse's second season as a program included a Conference Carolinas regular-season and tournament title.
It was an amazing second year for the program, but it unfortunately ended in heartbreaking fashion with the 10th-seeded Valkyries failing to advance in the NCAA Division II Tournament in their first-ever appearance in a 4-3 loss in penalty kicks to seventh-seeded Wingate on the campus of Super Region 2 regional host Lenoir-Rhyne.
The match will officially go down as a 1-1 tie, but the Bulldogs advance via the penalty kick victory.
Wingate first scored in the match right before the halftime break to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. The game would stay 1-0 in Wingate's favor until the 87th minute when Sergi Quixal scored on a penalty kick for Converse to eventually send the game into overtime a few minutes later.
Neither team could find a goal in the two overtime periods to force the penalty kicks.
Converse finished with a 17-15 shot advantage in the match. The Valkyries also had a 6-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The Valkyries close out their spectacular second season with a 13-1-5 overall record.
