Francis Marion and King Advance to Quarterfinals of Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship

BRISTOL, Tenn./FLORENCE, S.C. - West third-seeded King and East third-seeded Francis Marion advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship with second-round wins.
The wins by Francis Marion and King concluded a thrilling first day of the tournament. West fifth-seeded Converse and East fifth-seeded Chowan had advanced earlier in the day to face the home teams, but Francis Marion took a 3-1 win to move on to the quarterfinals, while King swept Converse to stake its place in the quarterfinals.
UNC Pembroke will host the 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Championship quarterfinals, semifinals and final at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court inside the English E. Jones Center.

Second Round Recaps
West #3 King 3, West #5 Converse 0
West third-seeded King led from start-to-finish in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 26-24) sweep of West fifth-seeded Converse to advance to the quarterfinals. Both Hailee Blakenship and Abigale Jayne picked up 10 kills for King in the win, while Claire Wilson (19) and Gabri Puertas (11) picked up double-digit digs.
King had a huge advantage in blocks in the match with Abigail Belcher securing eight blocks. Jayne and Zephanie Snyder both had three blocks.
Mackenzie Day had 22 digs to lead Converse. Jasmine Finkley had a team-best nine kills.
East #3 Francis Marion 3, East #5 Chowan 1
East third-seeded Francis Marion moved on to the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 win over East fifth-seeded Chowan.
Francis Marion started the match with a relatively easy 25-14 win in the opening set before Chowan placed themselves firmly back into the match with a dominating 25-15 win in the second set. The Patriots needed extra points to take a 28-26 third-set win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Patriots would take that momentum into the fourth set with a 25-10 decisive fourth-set win.
Caroline Lucas had a match-best 15 kills to lead Francis Marion. Kaylee Gillespie paced the Patriot attack with 43 assists. She also had 13 digs to collect the double-double. Katie Floyd had a team-best 14 digs.
Rosa-Martinez led Chowan with her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 12 digs.
First Round Recaps
West #5 Converse 3, West #4 Lees-McRae 2 (First Round at King)
West fourth-seeded Lees-McRae looked to be in complete control in the match with back-to-back set wins (25-17 and 27-25) to start the match, but West fifth-seeded Converse turned things around completely with a reverse sweep to secure the five-set victory.
Converse collected a 25-21 win in set three that was followed up by a 25-14 win in the fourth set that evened things up in the match at 2-2. The fifth, and decisive set, needed extra points, but with the score tied at 17, Anna Rabon connected on two straight kills to secure the 19-17 win in the fifth set.
The Valkyries had three finish the match with double-digit kills in Finkley (13), Rabon (12) and Megan Carpenter. Savannah Ducote had a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs. Day had 27 digs.
Sydney Stigler closed out an impressive season for Lees-McRae by finishing with 18 kills, 15 digs, six blocks and three aces.
East #5 Chowan 3, East #4 Barton 2 (First Round at Francis Marion)
East fifth-seeded Chowan began things in the match by winning the first two sets (25-22 and 29-27), but East fourth-seeded Barton battled back with a 25-14 win in set three and a 25-23 victory in the fourth set to even things up at 2-2 in the match. Chowan would emerge with a 15-12 win in the fifth set to advance to the second round.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez collected a double-double for Chowan with 16 kills and 10 digs. She also had five service aces and three assists. Allison Gambill had a huge day for Barton with 23 kills and 20 digs.
