BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – The magical season continues for top-seeded Converse as the second-year program captured the 2022 Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Championship title with a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Francis Marion.
It was a fast moving opening 45, but neither team could capitalize on numerous opportunities as both goalkeepers made outstanding plays to keep the game scoreless. Converse attempted 10 shots with six on frame, while Francis Marion took five shots and put three on goal in the period.
Neither team really had many scoring chances in the second half, but that all changed in the 79th minute when Sinan Kilincarslan sent a cross into the box and Tobias Bruecher beat his defender to the ball and slipped it past the keeper far post for the game-winner.
The Valkyries finished the contest with a 14-12 margin in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Converse also had seven corner kicks to two for Francis Marion. The Patriots’ goalkeeper, Andrea Scapolo, finished with seven saves, while the Valkyries’ David Windmiller tallied five stops in the win.
With the victory, Converse clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will find out their opponent during the NCAA selection show at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7 at NCAA.com.
