Three Meet Records Fall on First Day of 2022 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships

RESULTS | WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – It was a record setting first day at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the 2022 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships as three meet records fell.
 
The first record came in the women’s weight throw where Mary Brigid Keck twice broke the meet record with her final throw setting the new mark of 18.54m (60-10) which is also a personal best. Raigan Evans of UNC Pembroke also bested the previous record with a throw of 16.90m (55-5.5) to finish second while her teammate Lillian Marino placed third with a mark of 16.73m (54-10.75). 
 
Not to be outdone, Keck’s teammate Jon Wojcuich broke his own meet record with a championship mark of 18.09m (59-4.25). Alex Smith-Forte, also of Mount Olive, placed second with a mark of 17.21m (56-5.75) while Kolin Miller of King also earned All-Conference honors with a third-place mark of 16.99m (55-9.0). 
   
The final Conference Carolinas record came in the men’s 5,000m where Joshua Chepkesir of UNC Pembroke bested the old mark by nearly 46 seconds with a time of 14:17.89 to claim the race win. Cas Kopmels of Mount Olive finished second with a time of 14:32.07 which is also better than the previous mark of 15:04.53. Ian Kelbert of Lees-McRae rounded out the All-Conference honors with a time of 15:17.47.
 
After five scored events, Mount Olive leads both men’s and women’s rankings with 57 points in the men’s events and 46 in the women’s. Southern Wesleyan has 27 points for second in the women’s rankings followed by UNC Pembroke (24), King (23) and Converse (22) to round out the top five. UNC Pembroke is second in the men’s rankings with 34 points followed by Emmanuel (21.5), North Greenville (21) and Lees-McRae (18) to round out the top five. 
 
The final day of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships gets underway on Monday, Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m. with women’s shot put, men’s and women’s triple jump and men’s pole vault. The track events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s mile.
