BRISTOL, Tenn./PEMBROKE, N.C. - The 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Championship tipped off on Sunday night and No. 7 seed Francis Marion and No. 8 seed Emmanuel each advanced to Monday’s second round. 

In the 7-10 matchup in Bristol, Tennessee, the Patriots of Francis Marion outscored No. 10 seed North Greenville 57-31 over the second and third quarters en route to a 76-63 win. The Crusaders controlled much of the first quarter and held a 15-12 lead, but Francis Marion won the second quarter 32-20 and dominated the third period, 25-11, to take a 23-point lead, 69-46. The Crusaders fought back in the fourth quarter, winning the final 10 minutes 17-7, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Patriots. 

The 8-9 matchup in Pembroke, North Carolina saw the Lions of Emmanuel win all four quarters in a 72-57 win. Lees-McRae, the ninth seed, scored the first points of the game, but Emmanuel quickly answered and never trailed the rest of the game. The Franklin Springs, Georgia program won the first quarter 18-13 and outscored LMC 16-12 in the second to take a 34-25 lead into the break. The Lions extended the lead to 13, 53-40, with a 19-15 third quarter and edged the Bobcats 19-17 in the fourth for the final margin. Jeanetta Elder led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Lions while her teammate Sydney Wyatt added 21 points. Lees-McRae had three players score in double figures led by Aurora Roberts’ 14. 

Emmanuel will face fifth-seeded UNC Pembroke on Monday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. while Francis Marion will face No. 6 King at 7 p.m. The winners of each contest will advance to the Quarterfinals held at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Friday, March 4.
