Moena Battle of Emmanuel Earns All-American, Sprinters Qualify for Finals on Opening Day of NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships
RESULTS | PITTSBURG, Kan. – The first day of the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State started with a bang for Conference Carolinas as Moena Battle of Emmanuel earned All-American honors and three sprinters advanced to their event finals.
Battle, making her first career trip to the NCAA Championships, earned All-American honors in the women’s high jump with a sixth-place finish. The senior cleared 1.73m (5-8), which ties a college best, to earn three points for the Lions.
Things went just as well on the track for the league as Brian Sims and Sulaimane Bangura each advanced to the men’s 400m event finals and will earn All-American honors as long as they finish the race. Sims qualified in fifth with a career-best time of 47.36 while Bangura is sixth with a season-best time of 47.43. This is the first indoor championship for both student-athletes. The event finals are scheduled for Saturday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
In the women’s 200m, Jharna Alston joined the men in advancing to the event finals as she finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 24.30. The 200m event finals will be run at 7:55 p.m. on Saturday.
In the men’s and women’s weight throw, Mary Brigid Keck placed 16th (16.41m) and Jon Wojcuich was 17th (17.85m).
In addition to the sprinters, Zai Fraser of Lees-McRae will compete in the women’s triple jump finals at 4:05 p.m. while Orlandus Gamble of UNC Pembroke will compete in the men’s high jump at 4:30 p.m.
