GASTONIA, N.C. – The first day of the inaugural Conference Carolinas/Great Midwest Men’s and Women’s Bowling Championships at Liberty Lanes in Gastonia, North Carolina on Friday ended with four teams still alive in each bracket which includes top-seeded Lincoln Memorial in both the men’s and women’s fields.
The Railsplitters got a scare in the first round of the women’s bracket as the sixth-seeded Crusaders of Belmont Abbey won games two, four and five to push the match to a decisive seventh, but the top seed won 4-3. Kentucky Wesleyan, the fifth seed in the bracket, upset No. 2 Tusculum 4-1 while No. 3 Emmanuel defeated No. 4 Walsh 4-2.
In the second round, Belmont Abbey nearly earned an upset of Tusculum as they pushed the Pioneers to a seventh game, but the Pioneers won game seven 171-159. In match five, Emmanuel advanced to the semifinals of the championship bracket with a 4-2 win over Kentucky Wesleyan where they will face Lincoln Memorial who eliminated Walsh with a 4-1 win.
The third round of the women’s bracket gets underway on Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 a.m. with Tusculum and Kentucky Wesleyan squaring off in the consolation bracket in match seven while Lincoln Memorial and Emmanuel will battle for a sport in the championship in match eight. The loser of match eight will face the winner of match seven in match nine at 10 a.m.
Lincoln Memorial, the top seed in the men’s bracket, defeated No. 6 Kentucky Wesleyan 4-0 in the first round while No. 2 Emmanuel won 4-1 over No. 5 Tusculum and fourth-seeded Belmont Abbey defeated third-seed Walsh, 4-1.
In the second round, the Panthers of KWU defeated the Pioneers in a thrilling seven games which included a 236-235 win in the first game. Emmanuel won the fifth match 4-2 over Belmont Abbey while the Railsplitters used an empathic seventh-game 258 to defeat Walsh 4.5-2.5.
Saturday’s men's third round will begin at 12 p.m. with Kentucky Wesleyan and Belmont Abbey facing off in an elimination game in match seven while LMU faces Emmanuel for the chance to advance to the championship match. The KWU/BAC winner will face the loser of the LMU/Emmanuel match at 1:30 p.m.
