Barton Draws Georgia Southwestern in NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Barton won the 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Championship and received the automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship where they will face Southeast Region No. 3 seed Georgia Southwestern on Friday, March 11 at 12 p.m. in Dahlonega, Georgia. This is the second straight appearance in the tournament for Barton and fourth in the last five seasons.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 8 in the WBCA poll, are 29-1 on the season and have won 22 straight games with the lone loss a 78-74 defeat to Belmont Abbey on Dec. 4. Barton, who is the sixth-seed in the regional, is led by Conference Carolinas Player and Defensive Player of the Year and tournament most outstanding player, Shanika Peterkin who averages 18 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while Jami Tham also averages a double double with 15.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest.
The Barton - Georgia Southwestern (22-6) winner will square off against second-seeded Lander (22-4) or seventh-seeded Catawba (23-6) in the second round. In the other part of the bracket No. 1 North Georgia (22-7), the Southeast Regional host, faces No. 8 Columbus State (17-11) and No. 4 Wingate (24-5) faces No. 5 Carson-Newman (26-5).
Georgia Southwestern lost in the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals to Clayton State, 62-54. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Hurricanes.
The 64-team field includes 23 automatic qualifiers and 41 at-large selections. The eight regional tournaments will be held on campus sites March 11-14. The winners of the eight regional tournaments will advance to the Elite Eight to be held March 21-25 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
