Barton to Face Georgia Southwestern in Women’s Basketball Southeast Regional

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Barton, the 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Tournament champion, received the league’s automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship where they are the No. 6 seed and will face Southeast Region No. 3 seed Georgia Southwestern on Friday, March 11 at noon in Dahlonega, Georgia. 

  • The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 8 in the WBCA poll, are 29-1 on the season and have won 22 straight games with the lone loss a 78-74 defeat to Belmont Abbey on Dec. 4. Barton is led by Conference Carolinas Player and Defensive Player of the Year and tournament most outstanding player, Shanika Peterkin who averages 18 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while Jami Tham also averages a double-double with 15.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest. The Bulldogs average 76.4 points per game while limiting the opponent to 56 per contest with a 7.2 rebound margin. 
     
    This is the 10th tournament berth for Barton, second in as many seasons and fourth in five seasons. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Hurricanes. 

  • Georgia Southwestern is 22-6 on the season and averages 73.3 points per game while allowing 70.4 points with a negative 2.7 rebound margin. The Hurricanes have four players who have at least 11 points led by Ava Jones at 15 per contest and Jolicia Williams at 12.6 per game. Kayla Langley leads the team on the glass at six per game. 
     

    The Hurricanes are making their first-ever appearance in the 64-team field. Georgia Southwestern lost in the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals to Clayton State, 62-54. 

  • The Barton - Georgia Southwestern (22-6) winner will square off against second-seeded Lander (22-4) or seventh-seeded Catawba (23-6) in the second round. In the other part of the bracket No. 1 North Georgia (22-7), the Southeast Regional host, faces No. 8 Columbus State (17-11) and No. 4 Wingate (24-5) faces No. 5 Carson-Newman (26-5). 

  • The 64-team field includes 23 automatic qualifiers and 41 at-large selections.  The eight regional tournaments will be held on campus sites March 11-13. The winners of the eight regional tournaments will advance to the Elite Eight to be held March 21-25 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
