WILSON, N.C. – Top seed Belmont Abbey captured its second straight Conference Carolinas Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Championship with a 12-6 win over No. 2 Mount Olive at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium on the campus of Barton on Sunday.
Last season the Crusaders bested the Trojans, 12-7, and once again it was Belmont Abbey who came out victorious as four different players scored two goals and four others scored one for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey scored first, but Mount Olive scored twice to take the lead before a man-up goal for the Crusaders tied the game at two after the first quarter. Three straight Belmont Abbey tallies to begin the second made it a 5-2 game before the Trojans added two more to cut the deficit to one. The Abbey netted a fourth second-quarter goal to make it 6-4 at the break. The Trojans again cut the margin to one, 6-5, with a goal to open the third quarter, but the Crusaders scored the next six to put the game away.
Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Year Austin Hasen posted a game-high five points on one goal and four assists while Noah Haas, who joined Hasen on the all-tournament team, added three points on two goals and an assist and Noah Sexton matched him. Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Thomas Sullivan, made 14 saves in goal for the Crusaders and limited the Trojans to just two second half tallies. Chaz Goodman paced Mount Olive with two goals and an assist while Balke Tallon added a pair of goals in the loss. Andrew Avarello, another all-tournament team selection, played well in net for Mount Olive with 14 saves in the contest.
