Conference Carolinas Trio Qualify for 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee has selected the 56 teams that will be participating in the 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship and North Greenville will host Southeast Regional No. 1 and be the top seed while UNC Pembroke is the No. 5 seed and Belmont Abbey earns the sixth seed in the regional.
The championship provides for eight regional sites hosting three teams and eight regional sites hosting four teams, for a total of 16 regional sites. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 19-22. Regional winners will advance to the best-of-three super-regional competition May 27-28. Super Regional winners will advance to the double-elimination championship finals June 4-11 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive and the town of Cary, North Carolina.
North Greenville won the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles this season and enter regional play with a 45-8 record. This is the fourth consecutive regional appearance for the Crusaders who are hitting .337 this season and pitching to a 3.62 ERA. NGU receives a bye as a host of the three-team regional site and will face the loser of No. 4 Lenoir-Rhyne (44-11) and No. 5 UNC Pembroke (38-15) on Thursday, May 19 at 4 p.m.
The Braves of UNC Pembroke finished second in the regular season and were third in the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship. This is the fifth regional appearance for UNC Pembroke and second straight. They will play the Bears at 12 p.m on Thursday, May 19. UNCP is hitting .319 as a team led by Gage Hammonds’ .415 mark while the pitching staff has a 4.75 ERA in 2022.
Belmont Abbey earned the sixth seed in the region and will travel to Wingate, North Carolina to play in the second Southeast Regional. The Crusaders (34-17) will face Columbus State (42-11) in the first round on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. This is the first regional appearance for Belmont Abbey since 2018. The Crusaders finished the regular season third in Conference Carolinas and lost in the conference tournament to Mount Olive and North Greenville, who played for the title. The Abbey is hitting .293 on the season and pitching to a 4.67 ERA.
