North Greenville, UNC Pembroke and Belmont Abbey Open NCAA Regional Play on Thursday
GREENVILLE, S.C. – North Greenville, UNC Pembroke and Belmont Abbey will open NCAA Division II Tournament play on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
North Greenville is hosting Southeast Regional No. 1 and is the top seed, while UNC Pembroke is the No. 5 seed in the regional in Tigerville, South Carolina. Belmont Abbey earned the sixth seed in the Southeast and is competing in Southeast Regional No. 2 at Wingate.
Currently the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, North Greenville won the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles this season and enter regional play with a 45-8 record. This is the fourth consecutive regional appearance for the Crusaders who are hitting .337 this season and pitching to a 3.62 ERA. North Greenville receives a bye as a host of the three-team regional site and will face the loser of No. 4 Lenoir-Rhyne (44-11) and No. 5 UNC Pembroke (38-15) on Thursday, May 19 at 4 p.m.
Presently ranked 24th in the latest NCBWA poll, the Braves of UNC Pembroke finished second in the regular season and were third in the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship. This is the fifth regional appearance for UNC Pembroke and second straight. They will play the Bears at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. UNC Pembroke is hitting .319 as a team led by Gage Hammonds’ .415 mark while the pitching staff has a 4.75 ERA in 2022.

Belmont Abbey will travel to Wingate, North Carolina to play in the second Southeast Regional. The Crusaders (34-17) will face Columbus State (42-11) in the first round on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. This is the first regional appearance for Belmont Abbey since 2018. The Crusaders finished the regular season third in Conference Carolinas and lost in the conference tournament to Mount Olive and North Greenville, who played for the title. The Abbey is hitting .293 on the season and pitching to a 4.67 ERA.

The winning teams of each regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regional on May 27-28, with the winners of the eight super regionals then advancing to the finals of the 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, which will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Center in Cary, North Carolina, June 4-11.
