Wojcuich, Keck Earn All-American Honors, Bangura Qualifies for Event Finals to Open NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships
RESULTS | ALLENDALE, Mich. – The first day of the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the GVSU Track & Field Stadium on the campus of Grand Valley State started with a bang for Conference Carolinas as a pair of student-athletes earned All-American honors and Sulaimane Bangura advanced to the 400m event finals.
Jon Wojcuich got things off to a fast start for Conference Carolinas as the senior thrower from Mount Olive made the men's hammer throw event finals with a first throw of 60.83m (199-7). On his sixth and final throw of the championship, he marked 61.98m (203-4) to finish fifth overall to claim All-American honors.
In the women's hammer throw, Wojcuich's teammate Mary Brigid Keck also earned All-American honors with a seventh-place finish. She earned the honor on her first throw of the championship with a mark of 56.47m (185-3). Candy Lockett also competed for the Trojans and finished 13th with mark of 53.84 (176-8).
Mycherie Onwuzuruike rounded out the field event competitors on the first day for Conference Carolinas as she posted a mark of 5.60m (18-4.5) to place 17th in the long jump.
The first track event for Conference Carolinas student-athletes was the men's 400m where Bangura of Emmanuel qualified for the event finals with a time of 46.66 which was the seventh-fastest time in the prelims. He will race for All-American honors in the event finals on Saturday, May 28 at 3:05 p.m. Brian Sims Jr. of Lees-McRae also competed in the 400m but was injured out of the blocks as he finished with a time of 1:38.35.
Following a one hour weather delay, Britney Augustin of Lees-McRae placed fourth in the first heat and 10th overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.51, just ahead of Quanterra Harrison of UNC Pembroke who was fifth in the heat and 11th overall with a time of 1:01.01.
Championship action continues tomorrow, May 27 with Zai Fraser of Lees-McRae kicking things off for Conference Carolinas in the women's triple jump at 4:45 p.m. Justen Burnette of Mount Olive is the other league track participant on the day as he will compete in the 200m at 5:30 p.m.
