Three Home Runs by Jack Casbarro Help Lead Mount Olive to Win Over Barton

WILSON, N.C. – Three home runs by Jack Casbarro helped fourth-seeded Mount Olive remain undefeated in the 2022 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship with a 12-10 victory over eighth-seeded Barton at Historic Fleming Stadium.
 
With the win, Mount Olive will next play top-seeded North Greenville approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the second game on Saturday that will be an elimination game between Barton and second-seeded UNC Pembroke.
 
Barton came out strong in the top of the first inning with the Bulldogs plating five runs to take a very early 5-0 lead. Andres Machado started the game with a single to left field. A couple of batters later, Dylan Scaranda doubled down the right field line to score Machado and give Barton its first run of the game. Tanner Halvorson made sure to add more in the inning when he blasted a grand slam to left field to give Barton the 5-0 advantage. Mount Olive would score two of its own in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2 going into the second inning.
   
After Barton added another single run in the top of the second, Mount Olive plated three runs in the bottom of the second frame to pull within one run at 6-5. Casbarro captured the three runs with a home run that cleared the wall in right field.
 
Another three-spot in the bottom of the third inning would garner Mount Olive its first lead of the game at 8-6. All three runs came with two outs with Joshua Jones singling to get things going for Mount Olive in the inning. Cooper George would give the Trojans runners in scoring position when he singled to right-center field. Dylan Benton would bring both home with a double to right field. David Cucci would put the Trojans ahead by two at 8-6 with a single that would plate Benton.
 
The Bulldogs would tie things back up in the top of the fourth inning. Carelle Gonzalez arrived on base first and then was quickly brought home on a double to right-center field by Scaranda. Ryan McIsaac would double in Scaranda to tie things up at 8-all.
 
Mount Olive would go back ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs of its own. Casbarro’s second home run of the day placed the Trojans ahead at 9-8. An Alden Cottle double then placed a runner in scoring position for Mount Olive and he was quickly brought home by Aaron Hedgepeth to give the Trojans the two-run lead at 10-8.
 
The Bulldogs would get one of the two runs back in the top of the sixth inning with McIsaac singling in Scaranda. Mount Olive would respond in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs. Casbarro continued his amazing day by homering for the third time to put the Trojans ahead 11-9. The lead would be three at 12-9 when Hedgepeth singled in Vito Patierno.  
Halvorson singled in Scaranda for the final run of the game for either team in the top of the eighth, but Barton would not be able to get any closer in the two-run win for Mount Olive.
 

The game featured a combined 27 hits between the teams with Mount Olive holding a slight edge at 14-13. Casbarro led the Trojans with a 3-for-4 performance that included five RBIs, three home runs and three runs scored.
 
Barton had five players record multiple hits with Halvorson capturing five RBIs and a run scored to go along with his two hits.
 
One of four pitchers used by Mount Olive in the contest, Seth Nightingale collected the win on the hill for Mount Olive. He dealt two innings and struck out two. Justin Koehler pitched the final two innings to pick up the save. Michael Yuille took the loss for Barton. The first of four pitchers in the game for Barton, Yuille pitched three innings, striking out one. He allowed nine hits and eight earned runs.
