Samuel Trueba of King Earns Individual Spot in NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship
RESULTS | VALDOSTA, Ga. - Samuel Trueba of King carded a final round 69 to improve 15 spots to finish tied for third and won a playoff, 5-6, over West Florida’s Patrick Poate at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Men’s Golf Regional at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club to secure an individual spot in the NCAA National Championship.
The day began with the resumption of Friday’s second round and Trueba posted an even-par 72 to place him tied for 18th heading into the final round. Trueba opened the final round with a three-under front nine and shot even on the back for a 69 to finish the 54-hole event with a 210 (69-72-69). As a team the Tornado finished 16th after posting rounds of 293 and 297 on Saturday for a 3-day total of 881 (291-293-297).
Barton, led by Harrison Wierse (69) and Bryson Boyette (70), finished round two with a 291 to sit ninth as a team with 18 holes to play. The Bulldogs finished tied for ninth with a tournament score of 871 (282-291-298) led by Boyette and Muhammad Afif Mohd Fathi who each tied for 27th. Boyette carded a final round 73 to lead Barton and shot 74-70-73 for a 217 over the three days. Fathi carded 65-77-75 over the 54-holes for his 217.
Alberto Dominguez of Erskine competed as an individual at the regional and finished his second round with a 74, but carded a final round three-under 69 to place tied for 35th with a 218 (69-74-75).
Limestone won the regional with an 847 (281-281-285) while Barry (857), Lee (860), North Georgia (860), Georgia Southwestern (864) and Florida Southern (866) each joined the Saints in advancing to the National Championship May 16-20 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A.J. Ewart of Barry claimed the individual title with a 13-under, 203 (69-68-66) while Austin Fulton of West Georgia and Trueba earned the individual bids to the championship.
